KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The KC Streetcar is celebrating a major milestone at its future streetcar stop near Riverfront Drive and Berkley Plaza. One-hundred percent of the track work for the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension is now in the ground and complete. KCATA's Adopt-A-Stop program addresses Kansas City's litter Passengers can't ride quite yet, but next year it could be a game changer for KC Current fans. Just 14 months ago, crews broke ground on the Riverfront Extension Project. Spokesperson Tayler Ngo said the project is 73% done. She expects the Riverfront Extension will be passenger ready by early 2026. 'I actually live in Columbus Park, so I ride my bike to the Current Stadium. So for me, it's exciting because I'll be able to go a little bit further than I can now,' Ngo said. 'But also just being able to be part of a cool project that's just the start of the Riverfront development. There's going to be so many cool things around here and we'll be able to have easy transportation to it.' Next steps include shelter and installing the overhead catenary system, which involves arms and wires that deliver power to the streetcar. She said the poles are already in place. 'Right now we're not open, so people can just use that downtown line from the 3rd to Union Station,' Ngo said, 'When streetcar opens people will be able to get on at 3rd and Grand and come down here to Berkley Riverfront Park.' The Riverfront Extension connects the downtown Main Street starter line to Kansas City's Riverfront. The nearly three quarter-mile extension starts at 3rd and Grand in the River Market, crosses the Grand Boulevard Bridge and ends near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront, which is about a 5-minute walk to the KC Current Stadium. 'The streetcar coming right to the doorsteps basically of CPKC Stadium is going to make our match day experience that much more enriching for our fans,' Jocelyn Monroe, head of marketing with the KC Current, said. Kansas City Zoo to launch thrilling 'Flying Flamingo' zip-line Monroe said the streetcar offers easy access to a growing area and fans score. 'It's going to be a game changer, especially for Current games, for folks to be able to get on anywhere along the line, and be able to come straight to the stadium,' Ngo said. 'It's going to really change the game, eliminate some of the parking congestion down here and ultimately just providing better transportation to the city.' The Grand Blvd Bridge, which closed about two months ago for streetcar construction, is expected to open by the end of this week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 18th Street Bridge in KCK closing Saturday for replacement project
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The 18th Street bridge over the Kansas River in Wyandotte County is part of U.S. 69 and a key link for Kansas City neighborhoods. The Kansas Department of Transportation is moving forward with a project to replace the bridge beginning this Saturday, March 1. KDOT said the bridge, which first opened in 1959, is nearing the end of its service life. The new 18th Street Bridge is expected to open by fall 2027. KDOT said during the closure, drivers should plan ahead for detours and increased travel times. Grand Boulevard bridge to temporarily close for KC Streetcar construction Traffic will be diverted around 18th Street between K-32 and Ruby Avenue using state routes and interstate highways, including I-70, I-635, and I-35. Northbound traffic will exit at Ruby Avenue, while southbound traffic will exit at Kansas Avenue/K-32. Last summer, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded KDOT a $62.6 million Bridge Investment Program for the bridge. Upon inspection in 2017, the bridge was immediately closed for corrosion and cracking repairs. During this closure, from April to December 2018, comprehensive repairs were made, extending the bridge's life. However, a long-term plan was needed as the bridge was nearing the end of its service life, and maintenance was no longer cost-effective. In 2019, KDOT completed a study to evaluate bridge options and identify a preferred alternative. The bridge currently has four 12-foot lanes with narrow shoulders measuring two to three feet wide; the new bridge will use modern design standards with 10-foot exterior shoulders and 6-foot interior shoulders. Kansas City Streetcar temporarily suspending service for Riverfront Extension work
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Starting Monday, the Kansas City Streetcar is suspending service for two weeks. The temporary suspension is for continued work on the Riverfront Extension tracks. KC Streetcar is actively working to connect the existing downtown line with the new Riverfront Extension. For the next two weeks, constructors will be operating around the clock, including on the weekends, until all of the work is complete. The work also brings a couple of closures to keep in mind. Is President Donald Trump a Kansas City Chiefs fan? Grand Boulevard is closed between 2nd and 3rd streets and westbound 3rd Street is closed between Oak Street and Grand Boulevard. Constructors are also building a new northbound streetcar stop on Grand Boulevard. Also, a dedicated streetcar link bus service will be used to maintain public transportation along the streetcar route. Buses will pick up riders from most streetcar stops every 15 to 20 minutes. 'This is going to allow a direct connect between downtown and the Riverfront with efficient public transit,' said Donna Mandelbaum, with KC Streetcar Authority. 'Not just to see a KC Current game at CPKC stadium or to visit Bar-K, but it's also for all the residents that are currently living down there because there are at least 1,500 residents right now. This gives them a better connection to downtown using public transportation.'
