Storm Center PM Update: Unseasonable Warmth by the Weekend

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Once again, we have been treated to a wonderful day to get outside, but I will also say this much: This will likely be the 'coolest' day that we see until the week after next. As of 2 pm CDT Wednesday While we didn't have much to worry about in terms of active weather, we have at least seen some cloud cover today across KELOLAND. That, along with a more easterly wind, has helped keep temperatures in check just a little bit compared to yesterday. By the time Thursday rolls around, we're back to square one with sunshine and 80s for highs. The one exception may be out west on Friday with the chance to see some scattered showers as a frontal boundary attempts to make its presence known. A few sprinkles are also possible to the northeast. After that, we have three key words for the weekend and start of next week: Dry, windy, and hot. A robust ridge of high pressure sets up shop and keeps us feeling like we're in the middle of July rather than Mother's Day weekend. On the plus side, we don't have to worry about rain on Sunday…but we do need to watch the record books as several record highs may be in jeopardy through at least next Monday and even into the middle of next week for some. By next Wednesday, we do have a few things to watch. First, some 70s come back for highs in western KELOLAND while we hold in the mid to upper 80s to the east. Second, chances for rain and even a few storms pop up during this time…which is good news considering all the help we need to get out of the long-standing drought we've dealt with. Fallen law enforcement officers are honored

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Several hundred people gathered Wednesday for the 2025 South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony. Gov. Larry Rhoden placed a wreath and Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick spoke in tribute to the fallen. Moody County Chief Deputy Sheriff Kenneth Prorok was killed when he was struck by a driver during a high-speed chase on February 2, 2024. Parents' roundtable: Kids and cell phones Chief Hedrick recalled how the community came together after three of Rapid City's officers were shot in 2011. Officers Ryan McCandless and Nick Armstrong died. 'We are all defined by our response to hard times,' Hedrick said. Dozens of officers gathered beforehand at state government's George S. Mickelson Criminal Justice Center and then drove in a procession to the memorial ceremony at Capitol Lake. A service followed at Lutheran Memorial Church. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Dry weather continues; Record highs possible on Mother's Day

The weather in KELOLAND is looking mainly dry once again, even though more clouds are moving across the region. Highs yesterday soared into the mid 80s in Sioux Falls. Rapid City stayed at 65 with the clouds, but will be warmer today. Keep in mind, the normal high in still in the 60s across KELOLAND this time of the year. Sioux Falls will be in the upper 70s late this afternoon. You can see the widespread 70s across the region on the map video below. Rain chances will remain low, with just an isolated rain chance in the Black Hills. Otherwise, the weather tomorrow will be mild again with a blend of sun and clouds. Highs will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Expect warmer temperatures on Friday into the weekend. Strong south winds will be a developing story into early next week. Gusts over 40mph are likely on Mother's Day, with more wind on Monday. The wind forecast may get even worse by midweek as a potent storm system moves into the plains. We'll continue to watch the details as that system draws closer to KELOLAND. Watch those highs this weekend. Temperatures may approach record levels on Sunday. Here are the details of the forecast. Rain chance today far west; Turning windy, hot, and dry this weekend

As we begin the forecast, some of you have expressed more information on the drought situation across the plains we enter a mainly dry 7-day forecast. Check out this special video post for more details on the seasonal drought outlook and the factors to watch in the coming weeks. In the short-term forecast, warm temperatures and mainly dry conditions are the big headlines to watch in KELOLAND over the next few days. We have lots of sunshine to start the day in Aberdeen. Our 24-hour rain reports show how scattered showers and thundershower clipped western SD yesterday. That rain could redevelop again in patches in western SD. Notice how the rain is moving from south to north, not west to east. Clouds in Rapid City will keep temperatures cooler in the 60s. Meanwhile, Sioux Falls and Aberdeen will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Highs tomorrow will average in the 70s as the upper level disturbance to our southwest pulls away from western KELOLAND. After that, expect warmer temperatures heading into Mother's Day Weekend. The weather pattern continue to feature the strong influence of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. We will warm into early next week with widespread 80s and 90s expected in KELOLAND. A storm system should enter KELOLAND around Wednesday of next week. We'll watch and see if it brings storms and rain chances to portions of the northern plains. Here are the details of the forecast. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
