Mary O'Connell strikes late for Kerry to break Waterford hearts

Kerry 2-6 Waterford 0-10 Anthony Newman reports from Mallow KERRY HAVE RETAINED their TG4 Munster Senior Football Championship title in dramatic fashion. For long periods of the game Waterford were in front and looked like running out winners, but a late goal from Mary O'Connell was the difference between the sides in the end. That came after their first goal in the 52nd minute which reduced the margin to only a point between the sides. But the experience of the title holders got them through this tough test as they retain the cup after a top class game. Kellyann Hogan opened the scoring for Waterford with Caoimhe Evans replying for Kerry. Kerry took the lead four minutes in when Niamh Carmody scored from distance despite playing against the strong wind. Some good play, between Hogan and Karen McGrath set up Lauren McGregor to equalise for Waterford. A blistering run from Hannah Power saw her play Clare Walsh in as the Deise went in front after nine minutes. Using the wind in their favour they went further ahead when Brid McMaugh scored, to make it 0-4 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. That became a three point lead when another great run, this time from McGregor, saw her split the posts. Danielle O'Leary kept Kerry in touch when she pointed, as her side trailed by 0-5 to 0-3 after 22 minutes. Hogan, who was dominating at midfield, got her second of the tie and she added another to make it 0-7 to 0-3 with four minutes to half time. A free from Hogan put four between the sides before Anna Galvin scored to make it 0-8 to 0-5 at half time and all to play for in the second half. O'Shea got the first point of the second half to reduce the deficit as Kerry were now playing with the wind advantage. Katie Murry kept Waterford's running game going and it resulted in a fine point from Karen McGrath as Kerry were finding it difficult to deal with. Advertisement McGregor was on target again, as despite playing against the wind, Waterford were still much the better side, now leading by double scores, 0-10 to 0-6. But from a Waterford wide Niamh Ní Chonchúir caught a brilliant ball in midfield, turned and took on the Waterford defence. Her pass found O'Leary and she blasted to the back of the net, to make it 1-6 to 0-10 and it was game on again. With two minutes to go Kerry took the lead when Mary O'Connell pounced on a short Waterford kickout to score their second goal to make it 2-6 to 0-10. Despite the best efforts of Waterford, the champions held out for the win as both move on to the All-Ireland series in a weeks. In that Kerry will face Mayo and Cork, as Waterford will be pitted against Dublin and Leitrim. Kerry defeat Cork in Munster Minor Championship final

KERRY BEAT Cork 0-18 to 0-9 to win this evening's Munster GAA Minor Football Championship final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee. The hosts edged a tight opening few minutes with two points from Ben Kelliher helping them earn a 0-5 to 0-3 lead. Advertisement Kerry then scored four of the next five points to secure a 0-8 to 0-4 half-time advantage, including two in a row from Kevin Griffin. Griffin was influential again after the break, registering a two-pointer, before Eoin Maguire's third score of the evening reduced Cork's deficit. Another Griffin two-pointer helped his side pull away thereafter, with his latest impressive effort giving them a sizeable 0-14 to 0-7 lead in the 49th minute. Two points each from Tadhg O' Connell and Ben Corkery Delaney bolstered Cork in the dying stages, but they left themselves with too much to do, as Kerry comfortably saw the game out to secure their third consecutive provincial minor title. Full-forward Griffin was the undoubted star man for Wayne Quillinan's winning side, as he finished the game with a personal tally of 0-8.

Tyrone edge Kerry and close in on third U20 title in four years

TYRONE 2-14 KERRY 0-14 Kevin Egan reports from Laois Hire O'Moore Park IT WAS LIVELY, it was intense, it was open and thrilling, and it was evenly-contested in almost every aspect, bar one. Kerry created more goal chances than Tyrone in this All-Ireland U20 semi-final contest in perfect conditions in Portlaoise, but through a combination of poor finishing and all-out defence from the Ulster champions, Tyrone are now one hour away from making it three All-Ireland titles in four years at this grade. There was a lot to like about Kerry's play here, particularly in the manner in which they bounced back from Tyrone's fast start. Ruairí McCullagh and Eoin McElholm wasted no time in making their mark on this contest, kicking every score as Tyrone raced into an 0-5 to 0-1 lead, with Kerry only adding their second point in the 17th minute when Paddy Lane opted to take an easy point rather than go for goal. Two minutes later a long kickout over the top ran through to Liam Óg Massey and while it looked like the chance was lost when he failed to gather possession at the first attempt, he squeezed a handpass through to McElholm, who showed no such mercy as he blasted the ball inside Michael Tansley's near post. That was the score that finally sparked Kerry into life, and five points in five minutes showed the craft and quality that lay in Tomás Ó Sé's panel. Evan Boyle and Killian Dennehy were superb as they began to dominate the Tyrone kickout, with Dennehy kicking one of the highlight reel scores. Enter the new rules, and a couple of technical fouls – either side of another Dennehy score – that gave Tyrone oxygen when they badly needed it. Matthew Quinn was impeded after taking a midfield mark and then a three-up breach saw McCullagh kick two frees in a row, one from outside the arc, to leave it 1-8 to 0-8 when Kerry had been every bit as good as their opponents up to that point. Then to compound the damage, another long kickout over the top was worked through to Noah Grimes and he doubled the lead with one flash of the boot. On the next attack both Ciarán Collins and Paddy Lane tried to force the ball over the line from inside the small square but through sheer desperation, Tyrone found a way to keep the ball out, and throughout the second half too there were plenty more clear goal chances that Kerry couldn't finish. Eddie Healy dejected after the game. Ben Brady / INPHO Ben Brady / INPHO / INPHO Ben Murphy, who seemed to be able to slice open the Tyrone defence at will, failed to convert two of those chances, firing one narrowly wide and hammering another straight at Conan McGarvey, with Emmet Daly unable to breach the line from the rebound. For a while however, it looked like Kerry mightn't need a green flag. Their attack was more balanced, Ronan Carroll was a lively addition after he came in, and with ten minutes to play, it was 2-11 to 0-14 and they had momentum. Advertisement Their reserves of killer instinct however, ran dry. A handful of poor wides gave Tyrone the chance to push clear again, with McCullagh and McElholm crowning their superb displays with late scores to bring their combined tally to 1-13 in all. Scorers for Tyrone: Ruairí McCullagh 0-9 (0-3f, 1tpf, 0-1 45, 0-1m), Eoin McElholm 1-4 (0-1m), Noah Grimes 1-0, Shea McDermott 0-1. Michael Healy-Rae seeks injunction against 'serious and grave' publications about him

KERRY TD MICHAEL Healy-Rae, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, is seeking an urgent injunction to have 'serious and grave' publications about him removed, a court was told this morning. Barrister for Mr Healy-Rae, Elizabeth Murphy, instructed by Killarney solicitor Dan O'Connor told the Circuit Civil Court in Tralee she was seeking 'an injunction to restrain publication of a most grave and serious nature'. This was a civil matter under the defamation act and the respondent Michelle Keane should be called, Ms Murphy said at the outset. The objective was to take down and restrain further allegations, and she was seeking an interlocutory injunction, Ms Murphy said. Ms Keane usually represents herself and she had been notified by email over the bank holiday weekend, the barrister said. Advertisement The barrister also said this was not Ms Keane's 'first rodeo'. However, Judge Ronan Munro said he would prefer if the proceedings and notice of the injunction being sought was served by the Killarney-based solicitor to Ms Keane's address in Knocknagoshel to notify her that he would deal with the matter at 2 pm today. Ms Keane had electronic gates, Ms Murphy advised the court. Solicitor Dan O'Connor is to proceed this morning to Knocknagoshel to serve the papers by hand. If necessary, the envelope is to be placed behind the electronic gates of Ms Keane's residence, Judge Munro said. The matter is scheduled for 2 pm in Tralee.
