Paul Charchian is leaving KFAN, with Paul Allen bidding emotional farewell

Longtime Minnesota radio personality Paul Charchian is leaving Twin Cities airwaves for Utah. After over three decades as a contributor to KFAN, Charchian announced his departure Friday as he looks to "try something new" — moving with his wife to Utah. "I'm scared, honestly, of leaving the people I love. I don't know how it's going to work out but I just feel like the time is right to try a new chapter, while I'm young enough to still go hiking and camping and do all these amazing things in another state and not have spent cradle-to-grave in Minnesota," Charchian said. "Not that Minnesota is not great. It is great. I just feel like I'm at a stage in my life where I want to try something new and if it doesn't work, I'll come crawling back." As the founder and owner of several fantasy sports companies, including Guillotine Leagues, over the years, Charchian has been an on-air personality with KFAN for over 30 years, spending the previous 15-plus years as a key contributor alongside "9-to-Noon" host and Vikings radio announcer Paul Allen. The full segment announcing Charchian's departure can be seen in the video below. "It is the end of an era. Paul Charchian is moving to Utah with his wife. Leaving behind a multiple-decade legacy of helping us here at KFAN," an emotional Paul Allen said in the segment. "I just want to let you know that I'm going to miss you. Personally, I just want to thank you for everything that you've contributed to this radio show." Allen and Charchian are notably connected on the "Friday Football Feast," a 15-plus-year tradition in which Allen's Friday radio show is hosted at Twin Cities Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants. "This was a really difficult decision to leave almost all my friends, the people I've grown up with and the opportunity to turn on 100,000 watts of radio and just spew utter nonsense," said Charchian. "But most importantly, it's been the time with amazing people, like you, who I consider a dear friend. "It's really been a dream come true in many ways. This is the hardest decision of my life," he continued. "I've had to decide to build and sell companies. Nothing compares to the difficulty of the decision to leave somebody like you, who I've spent three hours every week with for 15 years, and all the amazing times we've had together, and things I can never have again anywhere else, any place else." Charchian didn't disclose what his role with the station could be going forward.

Beloved broadcaster Mark Rosen launches new Minnesota sports podcast

Twin Cities TV and radio veteran Mark Rosen is launching a podcast. The longtime WCCO sports director and current KFAN personality has announced the launch of "Rosen's Sports Monday," which is being hosted on the Talk Sports podcast network founded by Star Tribune sports reporter Jim Souhan. Rosen made his "Sports Monday" debut on the show this week, discussing his "new and old-school thoughts on Vikings, Twins and everything else." Rosen said during the show Monday he's "absolutely thrilled" to be a part of the Talk North Sports network and "is excited to getting into a new venture." "I was happy to do 30 years of Rosen's Sports Sundays [on WCCO-TV] and I was glad we had an established audience on channel four for many, many years," he said. "Had some great guests and a few of them I hope to get on this show." Rosen had Souhan on his first episode of the show, discussing their decades of work in sports media together. Rosen was inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2013. You can listen to Rosen's Sports Monday debut here.

WCCO-AM cancels local evening programming, including ‘The Lake Show with Henry Lake'

WCCO-AM has canceled its local programming on weekday evenings, including 'The Lake Show with Henry Lake,' but not Minnesota Twins games. The move comes after the talk radio station's parent company Audacy Inc. cut 250 to 300 staffers across the country, according to the industry website The site added: 'We're told that the majority if not all of the company's national digital content team has been eliminated in the cuts.' In a statement from an Audacy spokesperson, the company said: 'Audacy has made workforce reductions to ensure a strong and resilient future for the business. We are streamlining resources to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving media landscape and to best position Audacy to continue serving listeners and advertisers with excellence.' A graduate of Atlanta's Morehouse College with a political science degree, Lake returned to his home state and taught in the Minneapolis Public Schools from 1997 to 2004 and spent the next two years as a transitions coordinator at Anoka Technical College. He began his radio career in 2003 and established himself as a knowledgeable basketball host on KFAN FM 100.3. Lake left KFAN in 2013 for a five-year stint as midday host at AM 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City. He returned to KFAN in 2018 and jumped to WCCO the following year, initially to host a late-night show from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., or after Twins and Timberwolves games. He used the time to discuss sports as well as a host of other topics. More recently, he hosted 'The Lake Show' from 6 to 9 p.m. The final episode aired Wednesday. Based in Philadelphia, Audacy was founded in 1968 as Entercom Communications Corp. The company purchased WCCO from CBS Corp. in 2017. Entercom rebranded as Audacy in 2021. It's the second largest radio company in the United States and owns more than 220 stations across 47 media markets. Here are the Twin Cities radio ratings for Christmas 2024

KOOL 108 continued its reign as the undisputed king of Christmas in the Twin Cities radio market. The latest Nielsen ratings for the Twin Cities for December and early January confirmed the Christmas music powerhouse topped the table with a 14.6 rating. In second place was KFAN with an 11.9 rating, a dramatic increase on the 6.8 it posted over Christmas 2023, benefiting this time from the Vikings having an outstanding 14-3 regular season. The reporting period for the Christmas period ended on Jan. 8, five days before the Vikings were disappointingly dumped out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams.
