Brooks Koepka keeping options open: 'We'll see what happens'

Brooks Koepka on Wednesday responded to Fred Couples' recent claim that Koepka wants to rejoin the PGA Tour, saying that he has a contract obligation to fulfill with LIV Golf and that he's keeping his options open beyond that. Couples made headlines recently by saying in an interview with Seattle's KJR 93.3 FM that he's in frequent contact with Koepka who, apparently, 'wants to come back. I will say that: I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour.' Koepka, speaking with reporters Wednesday ahead of LIV's event in Singapore, said that he spoke with Couples after those comments came out and that he never goes 'too much into detail about what's going on.' 'Like I've said before, I'm not in those rooms,' Koepka continued. 'I've got a contract obligation out here to fulfill, and then we'll see what happens. I don't know where I'm going, so I don't know how everybody else does. 'Right now, I'm just focused on how do I play better, how do I play better in the majors, how does this team win, and then we'll figure out next year and how to play better again.' PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said that a reunification between PGA Tour and LIV players remains a top priority in the ongoing negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, but there are no upcoming meetings scheduled with President Trump or PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan. LIV Golf doesn't reveal the contract terms of its players, but it's believed that Koepka's deal runs through 2026. 'I've got nothing,' Koepka said of his future plans. 'Everybody else seems to know more than I do.'

Phil Mickelson rips Fred Couples as 'low class' over claims Brooks Koepka wants back in PGA Tour

Phil Mickelson ripped fellow golf star Fred Couples in a now-deleted social media post after Couples claimed that LIV Golf star Brooks Koepka is eyeing a return to the PGA Tour. Mickelson said in a post on X on Tuesday that Couples pulled a "low class, jerk move" by seemingly revealing in a recent radio appearance that five-time major winner Koepka "wants" to return to the Tour after bolting to the Saudi-backed golf league in 2022. "If it's not true, he damaged a relationship which he cares about," Mickelson wrote, which has since been deleted. "If it is true, he took away Brook's control of the timeline and narrative. Either way this is a low class jerk move by Fred." The post was in reference to comments Couples made during an appearance on KJR 93.3 FM in Seattle on Monday. "I talk to Brooks Koepka all the time," Couples said. "I love Brooks Koepka, and I'm not going to say anything extra except I talk to him all the time. ... He wants to come back, I will say that. I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour." Koepka left for the rival golf tour in 2022 ahead of the LIV's inaugural season. The back-and-forth this week follows a significant meeting at the White House last month attended by Tiger Woods, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. The meeting, the second of its kind, was seen as a move toward ending the division between the two tours. "Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, we have initiated a discussion about the reunification of golf," the PGA Tour said in a joint statement. The tour said it would share more details when appropriate, adding, "We are committed to moving as quickly as possible." Fred Couples says Brooks Koepka wants back on PGA Tour, but not room for other LIV golfers

Fred Couples says Brooks Koepka wants back on PGA Tour, but not room for other LIV golfers Fred Couples has been one of the more vocal PGA Tour players in opposition to LIV Golf. Now, as reunification talks are taking place, Couples is as interested as the next player to learn how things play out. But Couples, speaking on a radio show on Thursday, said he knows five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is anxious to return to the PGA Tour but isn't sure how many LIV players will be welcomed back. 'I talked to Brooks Koepka all the time. I love Brooks Koepka, and I'm not going to say anything extra except I talked to him all the time,' Couples told Dave Mahler and Dick Fain of KJR 93.3 FM ahead of receiving the Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award from the Seattle Sports Commission. 'He wants to come back. I will say that I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour. But for me personally, there are a lot of guys that are going to be pushed out…I don't know how you get an elevated event with 72 people and bring seven superstars in. What do you tell those other seven? Bye-bye.' Couples makes a good point, and clearly there are details, such as the return of LIV players, that still need to be worked out. Couples, 65, who remains active on PGA Tour Champions, explained why he has toned down his comments on golf's civil war. 'I'm not nearly as vocal as I was because everything's kind of calmed down,' Couples said. 'I want to say Jon Rahm is the last guy to leave here, maybe there's been one or two more. Basically no one, you know.'Couples said he's tight with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, two stalwarts of the U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, and that Scottie Scheffler has become a superstar and still is just 27 years old. Couples see the Tour getting increasingly younger and producing new names. 'It's succeeding,' he said. 'The Tour's age is going rapidly lower and lower and lower, so for us to throw them a bone to come back on the Tour…' Couples's voice trailed off but his point was made: how many of the LIV golfers does the Tour really need? Couples was in Seattle, the city where he spent his formative years, to accept a lifetime achievement award and was joined by his University of Houston roommate and dear friend Jim Nantz. They shared a three-hour lunch. Said Nantz, 'I'm so proud of Fred's voice being heard during all of this turmoil. He's been exceptional standing up for the game, and I believe standing up for what's just, and I'm really proud of him that he found his voice through all this.'
