Spring starts with average temps and fair skies

Our latest storm system has moved out and it has taken moisture, cloud cover, and high winds with it. Spring starts today and it will feel more like it compared to a cold and windy Wednesday. Before temperatures warm back up closer to average, we will have to get through a freezing start this morning. Even though winds will not be as strong today there will still be a breeze. It will be dry too so fire danger will start to go back up. Some of our counties to the west will be under a Fire Weather Warning from 1pm to 8pm. Fire concerns continue Friday. Outdoor burning is discouraged. There will be a couple of chances for rain over the next few days. Temperatures will be pleasant too. There will be another wind shift late tonight into Friday. This could be enough to spark a sprinkle or a light shower but this chance is looking unlikely. A second system will be quick on its heels Saturday night into Sunday. A thunderstorm or two will be possible to the east. This rain chance will favor areas between Central and Eastern Kansas. Western Kansas will be drier. More warmth builds in during the first full week of spring. There will be moisture nearby at times next week but we are keeping our area mainly dry at this time. Tracking Kansas wind speeds amid crashes, poor visibility

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The weather is causing problems for drivers on some Kansas roads, blowing a semitrailer over on Interstate 70 and causing poor visibility due to blowing dust. The KSN Storm Track 3 team is tracking the wind speeds. 'If you're driving through Trego County this morning, you're going to encounter blowing dust,' Trooper Tod Hileman, Kansas Highway Patrol, said. 'Slow down and turn your headlights on. KS law requires headlights if the visibility is less than 1,000 ft.' He shared a video of the blowing dust making it difficult to see very far in front of his patrol vehicle. A few minutes later, he announced that the semi had blown over on I-70 near Brewster. There was also a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 in Kearny County. Officials said blowing dirt there made conditions hazardous. Snow, some rain, and high winds through Tuesday 'Please, if you don't have to be out today, then don't,' Kearny County Fire Rescue said. 'If you do have to be out, remember while driving through the blowing dust to keep going, turn your hazards on and watch your mirrors.' The Lane County Sheriff's Office posted a message saying that travel conditions are hazardous for high-profile vehicles. Morton County law enforcement is asking that people not go out unless absolutely necessary, because the wind 'can be extremely dangerous.' Tax agents seize two Kansas Mexican restaurants for failure to pay $200,000 Depending on where you are in Kansas, you may encounter blowing snow instead of blowing dust. The National Weather Service posted pictures of the snow in Goodland Tuesday morning. Severe weather outlook: What can Kansans expect this spring?

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It is the first week of March, and our KSN Storm Track 3 meteorologists are already tracking the potential for severe storms. KSN's Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman says we are looking toward a busy spring. We know storms and tornadoes will happen in Kansas, but a similar global weather feature that fueled tornadoes farther west last year will once again be in effect this year. This winter has stretched on and on, seeming like it will never end, and it will be hard to shake the chill early in the spring season. This is not unexpected in a La Niña pattern, with the water off the coast of Peru cooler than usual. Tornado drill to be held in Kansas for Severe Weather Preparedness Week Looking to the western half of our viewing area, temperatures across our western counties will continue to quickly flip on a dime. This past winter, it was below freezing one day and nearly gaining multiple degrees the next. A surge many folks might not protest. Drier conditions also persisted here and will enhance the threat of wildfires early this season, especially to the southwest. Chances for severe storms will expand toward the plains in April and especially May. A lack of a drought in eastern Texas means the moisture supply for stronger storms and tornadoes will not be far away. Severe Weather Preparedness Week runs from March 3 to 7. During this time, KSN's Storm Track 3 Weather Team will discuss severe weather safety topics daily on air and online.
