Severe Weather Preparedness Week underway in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Severe Weather Preparedness Week is underway in Kansas. Each day will focus on a different topic, and the KSN Storm Track 3 Weather team will be working to educate viewers on the following severe weather topics. Monday: Preparedness and receiving weather information: Download the free KSN Storm Track 3 Weather app as one way to receive severe weather alerts Tuesday: Flood Safety Wednesday: Tornado Safety Thursday: Hail/Wind Safety Friday: Lightning Safety On Wednesday, at 10 a.m., the National Weather Service will conduct a tornado drill. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. The test will be broadcast over NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio. Local officials may also sound their warning sirens. Next storm system brings high winds and rain/snow The Kansas Division of Emergency Management advises everyone to prepare a home emergency kit with supplies to sustain every family member for a minimum of seven days. Kits should include nonperishable foods, a gallon of water per person per day, blankets, flashlights and batteries, a weather radio, extra clothing, necessary medications, and other survival items. Kits should also be prepared for household pets. Information on disaster kits can be found here. Severe weather safety classes begin in Sedgwick County

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Severe weather safety classes will begin Monday in Sedgwick County. Sedgwick County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service will present the free classes. The classes educate residents about severe weather and how to stay safe. The classes are for everyone, from the weather novice to the seasoned storm spotter. What can happen if you park under an overpass during a tornado? The classes will start at Valley Center Community Center, 314 E. Clay, at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Here is a complete list of the classes.
