KPCC president Sudhakaran gains unexpected edge amidst leadership delays

THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Operation Sindoor appears to have turned into an unexpected advantage for KPCC president K Sudhakaran, with the announcement of a new party chief facing further delays. With Anto Antony's proposed elevation hitting a roadblock, the Sudhakaran camp has now adopted a cautious wait-and-watch approach. This shift followed Sudhakaran's recent meetings with senior Congress leaders A K Antony and former KPCC president V M Sudheeran. Sources close to the high command said Antony has advised the AICC leadership against rushing into a decision. 'He has advised the high command to take all sections into consideration before taking a decision as the crucial elections are coming,' a senior leader told TNIE. Supporters of Sudhakaran allege that deliberate attempts were made to tarnish the KPCC president's image in the eyes of the high command. 'The reports that Sudhakaran had complained to the high command against AICC general secretary in charge of the state, Deepa Dasmunsi, were part of a conspiracy,' Mathew Kuzhalnadan MLA told TNIE. 'It was factually incorrect. We have high regard for her as she had the history of fighting against the Left terror in West Bengal,' he said. Sudhakaran has since left Thiruvananthapuram, while posters in support of him were spotted in several parts of the city, including near the KPCC office. In a calculated move, he publicly stated that the high command has never informed him of any impending leadership change, a remark that has put the party leadership in a tight spot.

Church daily slams Congress infighting over Kerala unit chief

Kottayam: The Catholic Church-run daily, Deepika, has published an editorial criticizing the infighting within Congress over the appointment of a new KPCC president . The editorial said Christians need representation in a democratic system as per constitutional rights, not positions in any party. The article was published amidst reports that Congress was planning to appoint a Christian leader as the next KPCC editorial stated that the Catholic Church would not intend to demand a specific number of ministers or the KPCC president. It stressed that the party's secularism is important, not the president's religion. The news first emerged that there was an opinion within the party to appoint a KPCC president from the Christian community instead of K Sudhakaran. There could have been an opinion in the party that such a move might help address the Christian community's disagreements with some of Congress's positions. This led to the rumour that the Catholic Church suggested someone for the leadership position, the editorial editorial noted that internal conflicts within Congress began to surface just as the party seemed poised to return to power, ultimately leading to the current dispute over the KPCC president's post. Reports suggest that Sudhakaran himself proposed Sunny Joseph, a former DCC president from Kannur, as his potential replacement. However, when Priyanka Gandhi (who is also the Wayanad MP) and opposition leader VD Satheesan reportedly recommended Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony for the position, Sudhakaran publicly editorial pointed out that religious leaders have no clear role in this internal party dispute. While Christians, like all communities, deserve representation in a democratic system as per constitutional rights, that does not necessarily translate to securing positions within any particular party. It warned that if the root cause of Congress's electoral failures is its organizational weakness, then the real threat lies within—not outside. The ongoing tussle over the KPCC president's post is just a small example of the editorial noted that a party's rise to power—whether at the national or state level—depends not just on its own strengths but also on the failures of its rivals. BJP has successfully exploited this dynamic across India, and CPM believes it can do the same in Kerala in the next election. However, Congress appears more preoccupied with individual leaders than with strengthening the party as a whole, the editorial concluded.

Kerala Congress state president Sudhakaran intensifies efforts to retain post, meets A K Antony

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid speculation over change in leadership, Congress state president K Sudhakaran intensified efforts to retain the post even as top contenders Anto Antony and Sunny Joseph continued with their bid to stay in the contest. Sudhakaran, who chose not to speak to the media, met senior party leader A K Antony at his residence on Monday. Meanwhile, there is growing displeasure among Congress leaders over giving a communal angle to the process of selecting the next party chief. 'Reports that Anto and Sunny are being considered in line with the interest of the Catholic Church will backfire,' a Congress political affairs committee member told TNIE. He said the party state head was never selected on the basis of community before. 'This shows a rift between sections of the Christian and Muslim communities over the Munambam issue. The selection of KPCC president on communal grounds will alienate Muslims,' he said. There is also anger among senior leaders over the alleged silence of the Leader of Opposition V D Satheeshan, on the issue. 'When the KPCC president becomes a party of a contention, it is the duty of the parliamentary party leader to sort out the issue,' a KPCC leader said.
