Netflix's adaptation of Webtoon Get Schooled faces growing controversy as Korean teachers demand cancellation over violent themes
Netflix's upcoming K-drama adaptation, Get Schooled, faces backlash even before its premiere (Image via Naver Webtoon) Netflix's upcoming K-drama adaptation Get Schooled is already mired in controversy, and it hasn't even premiered. Based on a Korean manhwa of the same name, the show's storyline and portrayal of educators have sparked intense backlash, particularly from South Korea's most influential teachers' union. The Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) is calling for the series to be scrapped, raising critical questions about the role of violence in education-themed media and the ethics of adapting contentious content. Teachers' union slams Netflix for promoting 'violence as education' At the heart of the dispute is the show's premise: a government official is dispatched to schools to restore order through physical punishment. While this might be framed as a dramatic or stylized approach to discipline, the KTU isn't seeing it that way. In a powerful statement titled 'Violence Is Not True Education,' the union argued the show 'distorts the role of educators and undermines efforts to promote a respectful, rights-based learning environment. ' Corporal punishment has been outlawed in South Korean schools for over a decade, and the KTU warns that normalizing such violence—even in fiction—'could normalize aggression in classrooms and erode democratic conflict resolution.' Broader criticism targets social messaging and harmful stereotypes The outrage surrounding Get Schooled goes beyond classroom dynamics. Critics have taken issue with how the original webtoon allegedly portrays marginalized characters—particularly women and people of color—as villains. These depictions, combined with a glorification of force, contribute to what many see as a troubling narrative pattern that reinforces outdated and harmful social hierarchies. Even though Netflix has assured audiences that the live-action version will be more sensitive, skepticism remains high. The creative duo behind the show, director Jong-chan Hong and writer Nam-kyu Lee, are seasoned professionals, but the KTU argues that reputation alone doesn't justify the adaptation. 'Creative credentials are not enough to justify adapting a story with such contentious themes,' the union insists. The controversy surrounding Get Schooled is proving that entertainment, especially when tackling sensitive topics like education and authority, cannot afford to ignore its social impact. Appointment of Ciza Thomas as temporary vice-chancellor of digital varsity not sustainable in law, rules Kerala high court
Kochi: High court has held that the appointment of Ciza Thomas as the temporary vice-chancellor (VC) of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences , Innovation and Technology (Digital University) by the chancellor, without the recommendation of the state govt, is not sustainable in law. The bench of Justice P Gopinath issued order in a petition filed by the state challenging Thomas's appointment by the chancellor. However, the bench clarified that the declaration of illegality would not result in Ciza Thomas being removed from office, as her tenure is set to expire on May 27. The court also directed the state govt to take steps to recommend to the chancellor the names of eligible persons with qualifications prescribed by University Grants Commission (UGC) for appointment as temporary VC, pending the selection of a regular VC. The court observed that the appointment process must be governed by the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers in Universities and Colleges, 2018. The state had alleged in its petition that Arif Mohammed Khan, the then chancellor, appointed Ciza Thomas, former VC of Kerala Technological University (KTU), as the temporary VC in Nov 2024 without following the procedure mandated under the University Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Click Here - This Might Save You From Losing Money Expertinspector Click Here Undo Upon examining sub-section (10) of Section 11 of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology Act, 2020, HC accepted the state's contention that such appointments must be made with the recommendation of the state govt and passed orders accordingly. "Why so much antagonism towards her?" Meanwhile, a high court division bench on Wednesday questioned the state govt on why it was so antagonistic toward Ciza Thomas merely for having served as the VC of a university. The bench of Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and Johnson John made the remarks while hearing her petition seeking a directive to the state to disburse her monthly pension, arrears, and other terminal benefits. The petition was adjourned to Thursday. While serving as senior joint director in directorate of technical education, Ciza Thomas was appointed as KTU VC by the then chancellor Arif Muhamed Khan in Nov 2022. Her appointment came after the chancellor rejected the name the state govt recommended for the post. Subsequently, on the day of her retirement in March 2023, the state govt issued a charge memo to Thomas, alleging that she had assumed charge as VC without govt permission. The high court later quashed the disciplinary proceedings initiated against her. However, the state govt denied her monthly pension and terminal benefits, prompting her to move HC.

Vice chancellor selection in KTU, DUK tough call for Kerala government
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Uncertainty prevails over the appointment of new vice chancellors in APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and Digital University of Kerala (DUK) as the term of the incumbent interim VCs in both universities is set to end this month. Though rules stipulate appointment of a regular V-C within six months of appointing an interim V-C, the process has been stalled indefinitely in all varsities due to differences between the government and governor on the composition of the selection panel. This would necessitate a return to the interim V-C arrangement. In November last year, former governor Arif Mohammed Khan had appointed interim V-Cs in KTU and DUK for a six-month period following the failure to reach a consensus with the government on V-C selection. Khan made the appointments after disregarding a panel of names provided by the state government. His decision was challenged by the government in the High Court. On Monday, the High Court made it clear that the V-C appointment must commence with the state government's recommendation. Though the verdict has come as a shot in the arm for the government, it is in a fix as finding a suitable person as interim V-C, as per the Acts of both varsities, seems a tough task. As per the KTU Act, the charge of vice chancellor can be given either to the vice chancellor of any other university, the university's pro vice chancellor or the higher education secretary. Notably, KTU does not have a pro vice chancellor at present. In the case of DUK, the charge can be given to either the vice chancellor of any other university or secretary of electronics and information technology department.

Appointment of K Sivaprasad as temporary vice-chancellor of technological university is not sustainable in law: Kerala high court
Kochi/Thrissur: High court has held that the appointment of K Sivaprasad as the temporary vice-chancellor (VC) of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) by the chancellor is not sustainable in law, as it was made without the recommendation of the state govt, contrary to the provisions of the University Act. The judgment, delivered by Justice P Gopinath, came while considering a petition by the state govt challenging the notification issued by the then chancellor, Arif Muhamed Khan, in Nov 2024. HC observed that sub-section (7) of Section 13 of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University Act, 2015, mandates that the power to appoint a temporary VC must be exercised only on the recommendation of the state govt. The state had contended that Sivaprasad, a professor at Cochin University, was appointed in violation of this requirement. Agreeing with the state's argument, HC held that the impugned notification was legally unsustainable. However, noting that the statutory tenure for a temporary VC is limited to six months, and that Sivaprasad's term is set to expire on May 27, HC declined to interfere with the notification at this stage. The court directed the state govt to recommend to the chancellor the names of individuals who possess the qualifications prescribed under the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, for appointment as temporary VC pending the selection of a regular appointee. It further clarified that the UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges, 2018, would govern such appointments. Meanwhile, higher education minister R Bindu welcomed the HC order. She said that the former chancellor had repeatedly violated the rules in the Act, despite the court directives to follow the rule. Chancellor is expected to abide by the laws which he himself cleared as Governor. Such a situation where the courts have to remind him of this important convention, is something that must be avoided, Bindu added.

HC declares unsustainable Chancellor's appointment of temporary V-C for KTU
The Kerala High Court on Monday declared unsustainable a notification issued by the Chancellor appointing K. Sivaprasad, Professor, Department of Ship Technology, Cusat, as temporary Vice-Chancellor of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. Justice Gopinath P., while allowing a writ petition filed by the State government, however, made it clear that the declaration will not have the effect of dislodging Mr. Sivaprasad from the office as his tenure is to expire by May 27. Besides, the court also observed that it need not at present interfere with the appointment as frequent changes of persons holding the office may not be conducive to the interest of the university and its students. The court, meanwhile, upheld the notification of the Chancellor appointing Ciza Thomas as temporary V-C of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology as it found that the university Act empowered the Chancellor to make such a temporary appointment. The court, while declaring unsustainable the notification on appointment of temporary V-C of the KTU, observed that it is clear that only persons who qualify in terms of the UGC Regulations can be appointed as Vice-Chancellor, even on a temporary basis, under sub-section (7) of Section 13 of the 2015 KTU Act. However, the procedure for such an appointment must commence with the government's recommendation. The government had contended that the Chancellor could not appoint a person who had not been recommended by the government as per the provisions of the Act. 'No provision in Act' As for the appointment of temporary V-C in the digital university, the court noted that the provision in the digital varsity Act does not contemplate any recommendation of the State government for appointment to the post of V-C. The court also directed the State government to recommend the names of persons possessing qualifications prescribed by the UGC Regulations for appointment as temporary V-C at the KTU. It also directed that steps be taken to fill the post of V-C of digital varsity without undue delay.
