KYTC plans to begin Glover Cary Bridge repair project next week

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announced Thursday that major repairs to the historic Glover Cary Bridge — also known as the Owensboro 'Blue Bridge' — will begin with preliminary work next week. When major repair get underway in early July, the bridge is expected to be closed to all traffic for about 90 days. 'Repairs to safeguard the iconic Glover Cary Bridge in downtown Owensboro are scheduled this summer to maintain the vital traffic service it provides across the Ohio River between northwest Kentucky and southern Indiana,' a Thursday press release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said. 'This is the largest repair operation on the Glover Cary Bridge since 2011,' said KYTC district two public information officer Matt Hughes. 'It has closed for more minor repairs since 2011, but this is the biggest project in recent years.' Hughes said that following an inspection of the bridge last fall, engineers estimated needing to close the bridge for around six months. 'But the engineers have worked to streamline the repairs in order to shorten the closure length, to reduce traffic impacts to a minimum,' he said. Last fall's inspection also called for repairs to the roadway on the Indiana side of the bridge, Hughes said. 'During that inspection back in the fall, they found some issues over on the north river in Indiana that were going to require the road to be shut down to make some repairs,' Hughes said. 'We were able to work with the Indiana Department of Transportation to try to get that built into this one project because we're going to have the bridge shut down anyway. So we though to go ahead and get that fixed as well so there won't be more inconvenience for travelers.' According to Thursday's press release, work on the bridge will begin with single-lane closures starting on Monday, June 9 and run through Wednesday, June 11. Flaggers will be directing traffic in an alternating one-lane method. American Contracting & Services, hired by the KYTC, plans to fully close the bridge, which connects Kentucky 2262 with Indiana SR 161, following the Independence Day holiday weekend, in order for the full scope of work to begin. During that time, the aging bridge deck will be replaced, concrete repairs will be made and bridge joints will be repaired. 'While the entire project is slated to last through November, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is limiting the actual bridge closure to 90 days or less. That schedule would have the bridge reopened around the first of October,' stated the press release. Hughes said that construction crews are planning to work through the night in order to keep the repair timeline to 90 days or less. KYTC said that closing only one lane at a time on the bridge wasn't possible to be able to complete all of the repairs. 'Crews will be fully replacing one 750-foot span of concrete-filled bridge decking while making repairs to a second span of the same length. Because the decking spans the entire width of the bridge surface, closing one lane at a time is impossible,' the press release detailed. Closing the bridge for these repairs, Hughes said, 'will allow for long-term concrete maintenance to be completed, rather than short-term repairs, helping to keep the bridge safe and open for many years to come'. Work that can be completed without fully closing the bridge is planned to happen outside of the 90-day window. KYTC estimates that around 7,200 vehicles cross the Blue Bridge, which opened to public traffic in 1940, daily. During the time of the closure, travelers needing to traverse the Ohio River into Southern Indiana should detour to the U.S. 231 William H. Natcher Bridge. Pilot project to help temporary fix safety concerns on busy Winchester road

WINCHESTER, Ky. (FOX 56) — People came to the table at Winchester's College Park to talk about what happens on the streets, especially Boone Avenue. 'You can't pull out of your driveway because they come around that corner so quickly,' one attendee said. Residents who live along the busy road joined city leaders to hear about a $20,000 grant after the city was selected by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) along with Morehead and Bowling Green, to participate in a national project: Smart Growth America's Complete Streets Leadership Academy. The city is working with KYTC to test out temporary street improvements. Read more of the latest Lexington & central Kentucky news 'Because they're not going to spend millions of dollars to redo the roadway without having something to back it up. So this is a way for us to try to do a little better, or we get to that million dollars,' one leader said. Although low-cost, short-term projects were outlined Monday evening, many residents focused on long-term issues. 'You've got fuel tankers flying,' one attendee said. Large trucks drive the road, even though they are not supposed to, according to a city ordinance, but community members say it is not getting enforced, making the area less safe and interrupting their peace. 'And when those big trucks come down through there, it will wake you up,' said roadside resident Allen Howard. Residents said a big issue is speeding, as the avenue is also Route 627. Many hope more crosswalks can be the answer to increased safety. If there were signified crosswalks, people would pay more attention, and I think they will slow down,' Howard said. Larry Disney has lived on the road for more than 20 years, and he echoed the need for more crosswalks along with bike paths. 'For right now, if we could get the crosswalks and have the traffic slow down, if we could police it to slow down at night,' Disney said. Those working on the project said they are looking at utilizing flex posts. Read more of the latest Kentucky news 'These flex posts are in the road; they're kind of in your way. They're not going to damage your car, but they're going to be uncomfy to hit at the same time, and so if we can put that out, it narrows that width a little bit and that will help slow speeds down in the short term,' said area resident and consulting traffic engineer Austin Obenauf. Project leaders will continue to collect feedback before testing out the possible solutions. To take a survey about Boone Ave., click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nighttime lane closures planned on KY 54 in Owensboro

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials say a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is planning nighttime lane closures as part of the KY 54 Widening Project next week in Owensboro. The KYTC says nightly from June 2 through June 4, crews will be closing portions of the right lane from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. in order to begin the installation of a new storm sewer that will run alongside the new roadway. Cross drain replacement in Muhlenberg County this week Officials say these temporary closures will be located between Hayden Drive at the 2.95 mile marker and Ralph Avenue at the 3.65 mile marker, but will not run the length of the project. The contractor plans to block the lane section by section as they advance from Hayden to Ralph. The new storm drain is being installed to handle storm water runoff for the new median that will be installed near the end of the project. The KYTC says in order to accommodate existing traffic, and to allow for continued development in the area, the KYTC is the process of widening the roadway to three lanes in each direction with a concrete median for added safety. Real ID enforcement begins Wednesday in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Wednesday marks the start of Real ID enforcement in the United States for anyone flying domestically or who is looking to visit a military base. It's meant to enhance security. According to the state's official Real ID website, only 36.6%, or roughly 1.3 million Kentuckians, have a Real ID. Last week, the Trump Administration declined a request from Kentucky lawmakers to delay the Real ID enforcement start date due to long lines at regional offices for people getting their IDs. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has announced a skip-the-line alternative to avoid waiting at driver licensing offices for your Real ID. Options are now available using online, in-office, and mail-in renewal forms. Read more of the latest Lexington & central Kentucky news KYTC has been adding staff and implementing new line management technology to make things smoother for customers. On Tuesday, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced that travelers who do not currently have a Real ID are still able to fly for the time being, but will be diverted to a different line for extra screening. 'People will be allowed to fly,' Noem said. 'We recognize that this is a security issue, and we intend to follow the law. So, we will make sure that it is as seamless as possible and that travelers will get to stay on their intended itinerary. But we are telling people that this law will be enforced, and it will allow us to know individuals in this country of who they are and that they're authorized to travel.' If you have applied for and have been approved for your Real ID but haven't gotten your official ID card yet, staff at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington said you are allowed to fly with the temporary paper ID given at KYTC offices. Prep work at Blue Grass Airport has been months in the making for the official Real ID start date. With that said, airport staff like Community Relations Manager Lauren Simmerman say as you pack for your next vacation, especially in the couple of days after the official Real ID start date Wednesday, you should pack your patience. LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS: Despite preparation, this is still a new process for everyone, TSA officers included. After Noem's announcement Tuesday, Simmerman is encouraging one other major thing as people prepare to travel. 'The best advice that we can offer is give yourself plenty of time,' Simmerman said. 'It's going to cause some additional screening, maybe a little bit of extra time and effort on your end, but hopefully they're going to be able to get you through.' If you don't have a Real ID, you still can travel with several different documents: Kentucky's REAL ID card versions or other federally approved cards offered by other states U.S. passport U.S. passport card DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents Permanent resident card Border crossing card DHS-designated enhanced drivers license Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID HSPD-12 PIV card Foreign government-issued passport Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian/Northern Affairs Canada card Transportation worker identification credential (TWIC®) U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766) U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
