USC upsets number one LSU
COLUMBIA – Pinch runner Dalton Mashore scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth as the University of South Carolina baseball team defeated No. 1 LSU 6-5 Thursday night (May 15) at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
With LSU leading 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, KJ Scobey tied the game with a solo home run to the bullpen in left. Pinch hitter Jase Woita then tripled to left field, one of three triples by the Gamecocks on the day. Blake Jackson was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. LSU intentionally walked Henry Kaczmar to load the bases. Nathan Hall hit a ball to first that Jared Jones dove to catch for the second out, but with Cayden Gaskin at the plate, LSU had a wild pitch to score Mashore with the game-winning run.
LSU scored a pair in the first on Daniel Dickerson's two-run home run. Carolina scored a run in the bottom of the second on Scobey's sacrifice fly. LSU scored a run in the fifth, but Carolina tied it at three on a Kaczmar RBI triple and a Kennedy Jones sacrifice fly. LSU took a 5-3 lead with a pair of runs in the eighth. Carolina answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth on Jones' RBI single to left.
Matthew Becker earned the win in relief, getting the final out of the ninth. Ashton Crowther started for Carolina, striking out four and allowing five hits and three runs in 4.1 innings. Brandon Stone also pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing two runs on six hits.
Scobey and Kaczmar had two hits apiece while Scobey was joined by Jones with two RBI.
POSTGAME NOTES
Kaczmar had two triples in the game. The last Gamecock to have a pair of triples in a game was Brady Allen against Charleston Southern in 2019.
The Gamecocks had three triples overall. Carolina also had three triples in the 2019 Charleston Southern game.
The Gamecocks had a walk-off win for the second time this season. Carolina also walked off North Florida on Scobey's RBI double.
