Petitions oppose establishment of Tasmac shop, bar in Arumuganeri

Residents, traders and political party members submitted a petition at Thoothukudi District Collectorate on Monday, stating that Tasmac shop and bar should not be established in Arumuganeri. J. Ramasamy, coordinator of All Party Protest Committee in Arumuganeri, in the petition said for the past eight years the area had been free of liquor shops, following the removal of liquor shops that were functioning in the area earlier due to several protests. However, attempts to establish a Tasmac shop and a private bar in the market area had raised concerns among the traders and the public now. 'The area is close to several schools, hospitals and religious centres, with hundreds of women and children using the area for transportation and other services,' he added. The residents urged the Collector not to grant permission for establishment of such a facility in Arumuganeri market region. Another petition, submitted by Kadambakulam Fishermen Welfare Association, opposed the government order to revoke individual fishing rights and mandate fishing rights in waterbodies through cooperative society or by a public auction. A. Ramesh, president of Kadambakulam Fishermen Welfare Association, said the fishermen of Kadamba tank had been engaged in fishing activity with the rights granted by the Fisheries Department. The association members requested reinstatement of the old system of individual fishing rights, seeking an exemption for Kadamba tank from this order.
