Kaamatan, Gawai Festivals bolster Bornean unity - Hajiji
Joachim (fourth left) received a token of appreciation from Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Ladislaus Maluda. PENAMPANG (June 29): The Kaamatan and Gawai festivals are not mere celebrations of gratitude because they also serve as a platform to enhance the cultural bond between the people of Sabah and Sarawak, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the close ties between the two states must be preserved, as they constitute the core of unity and harmony among the multiracial communities in East Malaysia. 'Sabah and Sarawak not only share borders but also a Bornean identity steeped in culture, customs, and traditions. We must enhance this bond for our progress and well-being,' he said in a speech at the Kaamatan-Gawai 2025 gala dinner here on Saturday night. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who also serves as the Sabah Minister of Local Government and Housing. Hajiji said the state government welcomes close cooperation with the Sarawak government across various sectors, including the economy, education, investment, and cultural exchange, particularly involving the participation of the younger generation. He also emphasised that unity and tolerance among different races and religions are key strengths of the nation, qualities that are increasingly rare in many other countries today. 'Racial unity must be reinforced so that future generations understand that Malaysia is a nation for all its people, regardless of background,' he added.

KCCI urges review of outdated Stamp Act 1949
Published on: Monday, May 26, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 26, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has called on the Federal Government to conduct a full review of the Stamp Act 1949, describing it as outdated and burdensome, especially for small businesses and rural communities in Sabah. KCCI Supreme Council Member Dennison R. Indang said the Act, which predates Malaysia's independence, continues to impose rigid penalties and complex compliance requirements that disproportionately affect microenterprises and low-income groups. 'In Sabah, many transactions are informal in nature such as family rental agreements or small-scale community loans and these are now vulnerable to harsh enforcement,' he said in a statement today. Dennison proposed several reforms, including stamp duty exemptions or reductions for transactions under RM10,000, an amnesty mechanism for first-time unintentional non-compliance, decentralisation of stamp duty powers to Sabah and Sarawak, bilingual digital platforms for easier access, and the formation of a Parliamentary Select Committee to reassess the Act. 'Our tax laws must empower, not punish, those trying to comply. We are no longer living in 1949, our laws must reflect a modern and inclusive Malaysia,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Donggongon Saturday night market
Published on: Monday, April 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Apr 28, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: People buying food from the stalls. PENAMPANG: A Saturday night market has added vibrancy and excitement to Donggongon township, a joint collaboration between the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Penampang Municipal Council. KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda said the initiative aims at creating a lively and entertaining atmosphere for both the local community and visitors. 'We have a day market, but not a night market. There was one organised many years ago but did not last long for reasons unknown,' he said at the launch. 'Today, we want to make a difference. We want to create an atmosphere that is not only entertaining but also enjoyable for everyone.' It would focus on promoting key items such as food and local crafts. 'We have many young entrepreneurs who have developed various types of food. This is a good platform for them to showcase their talents in food preparation, gain exposure and do a little business at the same time,' he said. He said besides culinary creativity, the night market would also feature crafts, souvenirs and other locally made products, mainly targeting tourists. 'There will be entertainment with a difference — something fresh and exciting,' he said. A minimal fee is charged for each vendor. If the response is positive, it would be extended to Sundays as well. Patrons were entertained by the local Evergreen Hybrid Country Band while 55 stalls were busy offering a wide variety of food and drinks. Ladislaus said KCCI has mobilised promotion teams to reach out and promote the night market to a wider audience. 'It is not just an event, rather a community celebration,' he added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
