Byadagi chilli market maintains lead position despite reduction in turnover
Haveri: The
Byadagi chilli market
retains its prominent position nationally, despite experiencing a reduction in turnover to Rs 2,000 crore, down Rs 1,000 crore from the previous year. For the fifth consecutive year during 2024-25, the market sustained a turnover above Rs 2,000 crore, overcoming various obstacles including Covid-19 and farmers' protests.
The market's operational strength remains evident, though cess collection fell below the expected Rs 28 crore in 2024-25, primarily attributed to decreased
chilli prices
, whilst maintaining Rs 2,000 crore turnover. The Byadagi market received various chilli varieties, including Kaddi, Dabbi, Gunturu, and Dyavanur. Supplies arrived from multiple regions, including Ballari, Raichur, Surupur, Shahapur, Bagalkot, as well as from neighbouring states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
The market witnessed increased arrivals of 72,72,285 lakh bags, generating Rs 2,067 crore and Rs 12.4 crore in cess. These figures differ from the previous period's 68,36,363 lakh bags, which produced 3,187 crore and Rs 19.1 crore in cess. The consistent performance from 2020-21 to 2024-25, including one instance of Rs 3,000 crore turnover, has strengthened its market position.
Price reductions occurred due to multiple factors. The reduced purchasing by oleoresin companies resulted in a 3 million bags surplus, whilst increased cultivation led to higher arrivals and quality concerns. The 37 cold storage facilities have reached capacity, creating additional challenges for farmers facing declining prices.

"Due to the price fall, the Byadagi Agriculture Produce Market Committee witnessed Rs 2,000 crore turnover, even though arrivals increased compared to the previous year. A total of 17 lakh quintals arrived during the 2023-24 fiscal year, but this year 2,067 quintals. Different varieties of chillies like Dabbi, Kaddi, and Guntur got better prices in the market and arrived from different districts, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. The chilli arrival increased during March, with 3.5 lakh bags of chilli arriving on a single day to the market. We have earned more than the govt target of

," asserted an officer at APMC Byadagi.
"This year, the arrival of chillies has exceeded expectations and demand, with buyers offering prices according to quality. Price variations are natural when production exceeds demand. The market and traders have always supported farmers, this is evident from the Rs 2,000 crore turnover this year," said Suresh Gowda Patil, president of the Traders' Association.
