6 Baton Rouge area students named Louisiana Students of the Year finalists

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Six students from Baton Rouge area schools were named finalists for this year's Louisiana Students of the Year competition. The Louisiana Department of Education said 24 finalists were named statewide. The awards ceremony is set for May 16 at The Cook Hotel and Conference Center in Baton Rouge. Winners will be announced for grades 5, 8 and 12. 'Congratulations to each of our finalists. They represent the very best of Louisiana's young scholars and leaders,' Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley said. 'We are proud to recognize academic excellence and look forward to celebrating with these students, their families, and educators in May.' See which students from the Baton Rouge area were named finalists. Zoey Olivia Jenkins from Parkview Elementary School in East Baton Rouge Parish. Kai Ava-Jrew Butler from Brusly Upper Elementary School in West Baton Rouge Parish. Christopher James Godso III from North Corbin Junior High School in Livingston Parish. Brielle Taylor Poche' from Gonzales Middle School in Ascension Parish. Marlie Blair McLellan from Dutchtown High School in Ascension Parish. Krishawndalyn Louise Rian Clark from Port Allen High School in West Baton Rouge Parish. Ascension Public Schools Superintendent Edith M. Walker released a statement congratulating two students named finalists. 'Congratulations to Brielle Poche' and Marlie McLellan for being named Louisiana Student of the Year finalists! Their hard work, dedication, and excellence truly embody the spirit of Ascension Public schools, and we are incredibly proud of the outstanding way they represent Gonzales Middle and Dutchtown High schools.' Ascension Public Schools Superintendent Edith M. Walker West Baton Rouge Schools released the following statement. 'Please join us in congratulating 5th grader Kai Ava-Jrew Butler and 12th grader Krishawndalyn Louise Rian Clark as one of 8 finalists each for Louisiana Student of the Year. 'Their achievements in leadership, academic performance, and community service exemplify the qualities we strive to foster in our students.
