Whanganui rugby: Kaierau remain unbeaten with win over Border

In truth, neither team played as clutch in the big moments that they would have liked – Kaierau missing two other first-half kick chase tries with in-goal fumbles, while in the space of 60 seconds from the 69th minute, both sides gave up tries from intercepts trying to be expansive near their posts to the centres in Ethan Robinson for Kaierau and Border's Alekesio Vakarorogo. But the passion was there – Kaierau may have been shy of backs but got home on some great tryline defence, holding up Border twice, while their forwards' line speed to get up and wrap some jarring hits never wavered. Hooker and try-scorer Joe Edwards gave a committed 80-minute effort, while lock Matt Ashworth was in everything. Reserves Josefa Rokotakala, Kohlt Coveny and Tai Pulemagafa delivered in the final quarter, as the Kaierau pack drove up Border's 50m scrum on the game's last play to bring about fulltime. Although Border played without injured skipper Ngapuke Patea, they welcomed back 55-game Heartland-capped midfielder Timoci 'Jim' Seruwalu, who, while short of a gallop, was always a handful. Flanker Ekenasio Fiso was dangerous in the first half, while standing out in their team's late comeback were reserves Sevanaia Vucinimoce up front and winger-turned halfback Peni Waqatabu. 'They brought it right from the word go, that was something we talked about at halftime,' said Kaierau coach Danny Tamehana. While Waitokia was moving freely at fulltime, Boult and Malo's status will need to be confirmed, as Tamehana considers how to plug multiple holes. 'I'm definitely going to be thinking about that come Monday, it's going to be a whole different backline, but we'll see what happens.' Despite the backline injuries, the forwards were strong even without absent skipper Doug Horrocks, Tamehana praising the reserves for holding back Border's momentum to the finish. 'It's something we spoke about during the week; they brought the energy and the impact, so that was really pleasing to see the bench work real well.' Border co-coach Todd Cowan knows that even with 12 new players this season, the winless streak must end soon. 'I think we're building okay, maybe not getting scoreboard wins, but we are getting wins out there as far as some improvement every week. 'I think the intensity today was definitely a level up from the week previous against Taihape. 'A pretty tough encounter, a few guys look like they're a little bit sore, but I think we'll be right, get back into things on Wednesday and into the next game.'

Whanganui netball: Defending champs make winning start to premier season

Georgina Nauga stood out, with composure and accuracy under the post. Coaches were thrilled to welcome back De-Ann Tyrell, Kelera Kuruyabaki and Sarah Taki-Clarke – three talented mums returning after a season off. Their experience, poise and leadership are a welcome addition back into the squad. 'Kaiwhaiki showed experience, we showed newness, but it was good just to get the cobwebs off,' Collegiate spokesperson Elise Niu said. The young Collegiate team showed great promise on the court. Newcomer Sophie Bagrie made a solid debut, contributing positively. Kaiwhaiki took the win 51-29. The first Premier 2 game of the season was St Johns Club Tech A1 against Kaierau Gemini Pepper Construction A3. The first quarter was relatively even, with the Tech side taking the lead by nine at halftime. Kaierau Coaches Connie Hadfield and Carmen Karipa were pleased with their team's first outing, showing great teamwork, led strongly by Kiti Tumanko. With many new players and first outings at Premier level, the team are feeling positive about the season. Tech took the game 51-29. Second up in Premier 1 saw last year's champions Kaierau Mitre 10 Mega A1 play Phillips Electrical Whanganui High School A1. With captain Nevaeh Blake away for New Zealand Touch this week, new High School player Mischa Petley worked tirelessly at centre, combining well with WA Annabelle Brown, also a newcomer to the team. Coach Lisa Murphy was pleased with how well her team gelled. 'They grew each quarter as a team, which was nice to watch'. Shooters Ruby Bullock and Ella Campbell worked the circle nicely, with defensive trio Mae Emmett, Isla Jones and Elicia Thompson providing some nice turnover ball. The Kaierau side, with only two players from last year's squad and a new management team, is focusing on solidifying combinations and communication. With plenty of takeaways from the game, both teams are very satisfied with their first outing. Kaireau took the game 34-29. The next Premier 2 game was Kaierau Air Whanganui A2 against Mt View Marist A2. Marist A2 had a great first half, going goal for goal against the Kaierau side. Momentum was lost in the third quarter, with the experienced Kaierau side capitalising and taking the win 44-24. Marist's Aaliyah Grant in WD played a fantastic first game, while Lucy Somerville in GK showed some exceptional intercepting. While it was a loss for the team, they were happy with their performance. The Kaierau side took a bit for the dust to blow off their shoes, but some consistent, accurate passing and feeding to the shooters from Georgia Bronwal and Hailey Sinkinson in the third quarter saw the scoreline grow. The last Premier 1 game for the opening evening was a close match between Marist Mint A1 and HP Pirates A1. The Pirates side came out firing, taking the lead 24-14 by halftime, giving the very new-look Marist side a quick introduction to Premier level netball. With only three players from last season, the goal for Marist was to get everyone on court, shake off the nerves and get a feel for what is in store for them for the season. With some great defensive work from Kayana Tahana-Hopkins and Zeah Brewer, the Marist side were very pleased to peg back the score from a 17-goal deficit after three quarters to narrow that gap to 35-32 at the final whistle. Pirates were happy with a very solid start, with a new shooting combination of Shontaye Walker and Cheyann McDougall gelling nicely. Tuahine Hadfield and Brigitte Taiaroa fed some beautiful ball into them, with relentless through court defence. The last Premier 2 game of the evening saw newcomers Waimarino, who were promoted into the grade after last season's win in the Premier 3 grade, play last season's Premier 2 winners Kaiwhaiki A2. The new team showed a promising start to the season. Young 16-year-old Atahu Bishop paired up well in the circle with Deli Taylor. Another youngster, Paetyn Brown also stepped up in at WD, bringing ball strongly through court. Nerves, new surroundings and the big move from Saturday netball were all overcome, and the Waimarino took the win by a slim margin, 33-32. Results of the evening's games show we are in for an exciting season, so get your winter woollies on and come down to the stadium on a Monday night, and see our top netballers in action.

Whanganui club rugby: Kaierau remain unbeaten with dominant 50-13 win over Marist

The play remained scrappy early in the second stanza, but then the decisive moment came when Kaierau fullback Adam Boult hared after a tactical ruck kick from first five Sheldon Pakinga, snatching it and clearing two defenders to score, Pakinga deservedly adding the extras. Kaierau now looked to their deep bench and, after forcing a turnover inside Marist's 22m, the reserve forwards went the direct route, with hooker Joe Edwards diving under the posts for 26-8. Waitokia spied some open space for an attacking chip kick, which he regathered and fired out for winger Ezra Malo to dash into the corner. Marist would not lie down. Following a penalty scrum win, they attacked across the width and eventually hooker Atriane Marino drove through his tackler to score for 31-13. But they would get no closer, as Boult cut through to score a double and then, after reserve winger Adrian Toia snaffled an attempted Marist clearance, his team quickly spread to the clubrooms corner for Waitokia to also get a double, Pakinga converting from the touchline. The try to bring up 50 points was special as a Robinson chip was grabbed by Waitokia, who attacked deep into Marist territory, and then Malo's cross-kick was claimed in the air by Pakinga to score. It was a different story in the curtain-raiser from the senior competition as Forest 360 Marist Knights ran riot against Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau, winning the contest 83-0. The Whanganui Challenge Shield was successfully defended for the first time this season at Macnab Domain, as McCrea Scanning Counties defeated Kelso Hunterville 26-15. Undefeated McCarthy's Transport Rupaehu held off Direct Connect Marist Celtic 24-19, while in the Memorial Park derby, Utiku Old Boys picked up their first win despite a late score by Taihape, 31-29. Whanganui club rugby: Promising first fives ones to watch in Taihape v Rātana match

Taihape won't have the Barracks Challenge Shield to defend, having surrendered it last weekend to Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau 38-26, but the inter-club Whenuaroa Shield will be at stake. 'We've just been struggling just for a real solid bench, had a few guys unavailable and a few guys injured, especially from the Marist game [in week one],' said Taihape coach Sefo Bourke. 'We went into the Kaierau game not as deep on the bench as we'd like – the reason why Tremaine [Gilbert] had to play off the bench. 'I think, in the end, that's what got us as well as their fast start and our poor start.' Taihape have been reinforced in the front row by the Hakaraias – 55-game Whanganui rep Gabriel and former Development XV and Māori rep Te Uhi, transferring from McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu. 'They've been an awesome edition, obviously Gabe again, but him bringing Te Uhi and Jack Kinder,' said Bourke of the talented flanker. Taihape's other experienced men include Peter-Travis Hay-Horton, Matt Brown and Hoani Woodhead in the pack, backed by Tyler Rogers-Holden, Tiari Mumby and Cyrus Tasi out wide. Veteran Luke Whale is assisting Bourke and Gilbert as a backs coach, as his knee injury during the warm-up for Whanganui's game against King Country last October has not come right. Interestingly, former Whanganui captain Dane Whale remains on the reserves bench. 'We just want to develop Chad into the player we think he can be – definitely got a lot of natural talent there – but just his game management stuff he needs to work on, especially for us,' said Bourke. 'We've got Dane there as a back-up at the moment, Dane's just easing his way back into footy. 'His experience, he offers a lot, off the bench gives us really good cover in most of the backline positions.' That backline will have to work hard to contain the likes of Rātana's Mason, fullback Rangi Kui and young skipper Brooklyn Herewini. But Bourke fancies the prospects of his own bolters as well. 'Young Hamuera Raukawa on the wing has played two really, really good games – he got a really good try against Kaierau which kept us in the game.' Draw Taihape v Rātana Memorial Park; Kaierau v Marist, Country Club (Challenge Shield).
