Deputies: One killed in shooting near Kalamazoo

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was killed in a Kalamazoo-area shooting Tuesday afternoon, deputies say. It happened around 2:30 p.m. at the Canterbury House Apartments, located off of Drake Road in Oshtemo Township. Deputies were sent to the scene in response to a call about a gunshot, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said in a release. A male victim was found unresponsive in one of the apartment buildings, the sheriff's office said. First responders on scene attempted life-saving measures. He was then brought to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, the sheriff's office said. His identity is not being released, pending notification of his family. A witness on scene gave deputies a description of a potential suspect, who was seen fleeing from the area, the sheriff's office said. Law enforcement quickly found an individual matching the description and took them into custody for questioning. Deputies were still on scene around 4:45 p.m. as they interviewed witnesses and investigate, the sheriff's office said. 3 killed, 3 hurt from same family when tree falls on car during storm

CLIMAX TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Three people were killed after a tree struck their vehicle in Michigan as strong storms moved through the area Sunday, deputies say. It happened around 5:40 p.m. in Climax Township, about 130 miles west of Detroit. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said its initial investigation found that a tree hit the car. Three family members were killed. Three other family members were hospitalized, one in critical condition and two in stable condition. The names of the people killed were not released Sunday night pending notification of family. Photos: Damage after strong winds, possible tornado in Michigan Kalamazoo County had been under a National Weather Service severe thunderstorm warning at the time, one of several on Sunday in southern Michigan. More than 400,000 power outages were reported across Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, according to Crews including DTE Energy in Michigan were working to restore service. Nexstar's WOOD reported that tornado warnings were also in effect in nearby areas, and storms packed strong winds, including gusts above 80 mph in metro Grand Rapids and around 60 mph in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. The National Weather Service was expected to send crews out Monday to review the storm damage and determine whether it was caused by tornadoes and, if so, exactly where they touched down. Clusters of thunderstorms accompanied by strong to severe wind gusts and perhaps a few tornadoes could spread across much of the Southeast on Monday, according to the weather service's Storm Prediction Center. Deadly storm triggers alert for millions and leaves thousands without power across the Midwest

A severe winter storm has killed at least six and left almost half a million energy customers without power Monday morning, as strong winds and heavy rain caused havoc from the mid-Atlantic to the South. "Large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes can all be expected" over the Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi valleys, through the mid-Atlantic, the Southeast and the Gulf Coast, the National Weather Service said in an early Monday forecast. More than 70 million were under various weather alerts Sunday night. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said that three people from the same family were killed when a tree hit a vehicle Sunday, with three others taken to local hospitals. One is in critical condition and the other two are stable, the Monday statement said. The Porter County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a man died Sunday in Valparaiso, Indiana, when his semitruck and trailer were blown over in winds of up to 80 mph. The victim was identified as 34-year-old Jagbir Singh, and there were widespread reports of trees being knocked down or uprooted in strong gusts. A man was killed in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, when a tree fell onto a camper just before 2 a.m. Sunday, NBC affiliate KJRH of Tulsa reported, citing local officials. A preliminary report from the weather service office in northern Indiana said that one person was killed when an Amish buggy was toppled in high winds in Millersburg, Indiana. NBC News contacted law enforcement officials but did not receive confirmation of this report until early Monday. The city of Elkhart, Indiana, said that while there were no fatalities overnight, there was extensive damage, including a collapsed building. Police warned people not to leave their homes unless it was "absolutely necessary." The weather service urged people under a tornado watch to know where their nearest shelter is and to immediately go there. One resident in Vancleave, Mississippi, posted footage online Sunday showing an enormous funnel cloud. Another potential tornado was filmed in Doniphan, Missouri, against a backdrop of dark, foreboding clouds. Freezing rain and high winds brought down power lines across the Great Lakes region, from Michigan to Wisconsin, while forecasters warned that the severe weather is headed south and could reach Tennessee. On Monday morning, almost 300,000 energy customers in Michigan were in the dark, and more than 50,000 connections were down in Wisconsin and Indiana. The Associated Press reported that churches, schools and firehouses became makeshift shelters for some. The weather service office in Gaylord, Michigan, posted pictures showing almost an inch of ice had accumulated there. Jesika Fox told the AP that she and her husband drove for more than 40 minutes from Alpena, Michigan, to find fuel for a generator that had lost power Saturday night. "We just passed a veterinary clinic. The entire front corner of the building was taken out by a tree," Fox, 36, said. These storms should move into the Atlantic by late Monday into Tuesday, although there may be flurries for the interior Northeast and the chance of thunderstorms will persist for Florida. There were reports and images of flooding in Florida on Sunday, affecting the last day of the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. For the West Coast, a strong Pacific coastal weather system is due to bring heavy rain and winds of up to 70 mph to Northern California and southern Oregon in the next two days, the weather service said. Heavy snow of between 2 and 4 feet is expected in the mountain regions, while the Great Basin and the northern and central Rockies could receive upwards of 12 inches. This weather system will move east Tuesday into the Plains and the Mississippi Valley, continuing the volatile conditions. This article was originally published on

Father sentenced in son's hot car death near Vicksburg

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Southwest Michigan father received probation and a delayed jail sentence in the death of his 3-year-old son, who was left in a hot car last year. Chad Martin of Athens was sentenced Thursday to nine months in jail and three years of probation, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office said. However, the jail sentence was delayed, prosecutors said. A status conference was scheduled for December to check in on Martin's progress on probation, at which point the judge will decide if he will actually serve the jail time. The toddler was discovered dead in Martin's SUV on the at a Family Fare in Vicksburg. The death was believed to have been the result of prolonged heat exhaustion, with the temperature that day higher than 80 degrees. Police reports outline day of toddler's hot car death Police reports from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office obtained by News 8 show Martin told investigators nothing was different about the family's routine the day his son died. He said he wasn't running late, had been sleeping normally and doesn't use sleeping aids or recreational drugs or drink. 'I guess I went straight to work,' the report says he told investigators when he was interviewed. Martin arrived at his job at a plant in Brady Township, just outside of the Vicksburg limits, around 6:40 a.m., the reports show. He left around 3 p.m. and then stopped by the Family Fare. He was inside for a few minutes and when he came out, he realized his son was still in the car, buckled into in a rear-facing car seat in the driver's side back seat. The boy was dead by then. Doctor offers warning after toddler's hot car death near Vicksburg Martin was charged in November with leaving a child in a vehicle causing death and pleaded guilty in January. Prosecutors previously explained that under state law, it didn't matter whether he meant to leave the child in the car or not. 'In fact, they generally in these cases just have forgotten about the child rather than wanting to harm them,' Kalamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Williams previously told News. Deputies investigating after 2 pizza delivery drivers robbed in Galesburg

GALESBURG, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office is investigating a disturbing trend in Galesburg off Burgess Drive after two separate pizza delivery drivers were robbed at gunpoint weeks apart. Sheriff Richard Fuller said the initial incident happened just after midnight on Jan. 1. A Hungry Howie's driver told deputies he was robbed by a 40- or 50-something Black man who was about 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin build. 'Initially, we weren't sure if they did or didn't display a firearm, but ultimately the person turned over their baked goods, their pizzas to the suspect and the suspect fled,' Fuller said. The second incident occurred over a month later, on Feb. 26, in the exact same area. Galesburg Pizza King said in a now-deleted Facebook post that one of its 'worst fears came true.' Although the driver was unharmed physically, the emotional toll the robbery took on both the driver and his fellow staffers played a role in the company reexamining its delivery routes and policies. 'We put out a team of drones, we had K-9s and had detectives in both cases investigating these cases, trying to see what we could find these nights,' Fuller said. It is unclear if one or more people are involved with these robberies, but Fuller said the two incidents are likely connected. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
