2 adults, teen arrested after armed robbery in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Multiple people were arrested following an armed robbery in Kalamazoo on Saturday. Just before 4:30 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of N Rose Street near W Kalamazoo Avenue after receiving reports about an armed robbery. Responding officers learned from the victim that he was jumped by multiple people, pistol-whipped and had property stolen from him. The people then took off. Around 7 p.m., officers found the suspected vehicle on Portage Street near 2nd Street. A 17-year-old Kalamazoo boy ran off. He was quickly arrested on weapon and drug charges, KDPS said. He is being held in the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home. KDPS said evidence of the armed robbery was found in the vehicle. A 26-year-old from Kalamazoo was arrested for armed robbery and drug charges. A 20-year-old from Kalamazoo was arrested for resisting and obstructing police. KDPS said they are both being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail. In addition to the armed robbery arrests, five people, including a teenager, were arrested during traffic stops in Kalamazoo over Memorial Day weekend on weapons charges, KDPS said. 'This operation was conducted due to the recent gun violence that has occurred in our community. In a concerted effort to reduce gun violence, we will continue these enforcement operations throughout the Summer and beyond if necessary,' KDPS said in a release. Police: Man shot multiple times in Kalamazoo, suspect at large
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is in critical but stable condition after a shooting in Kalamazoo Friday morning, police say. Just after 9 a.m., officers were sent to the near Portage Street after receiving reports of gunfire, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said in a release. Shortly after the reports of the gunfire, a man who had been shot arrived at a local hospital in a private vehicle, KDPS says. Police say the 24-year-old, a Kalamazoo resident, had multiple gunshot wounds. He underwent emergency surgery, and is now in critical but stable condition. Police believe he was shot during a physical altercation between himself and the suspect. While the suspect is still at large and has not been identified, others have been arrested in connection to the shooting, KDPS says. It says officers arrested an 18-year-old man for carrying a concealed weapon and aiding and abetting a felony, along with a 29-year-old man for outstanding warrants and a charge of serving as an accessory after the fact to a felony. Both are residents of Kalamazoo. Police were able to identify a suspect vehicle using Flock (license plate reader) cameras. Evidence connected to the shooting was also found when the Kalamazoo County SWAT team executed a search warrant in the near Michigan Avenue, police say. KDPS: 3-year-old shot herself after finding gun in car
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A 3-year-old is in the hospital after she shot herself Saturday night after finding a gun in a vehicle, police say. Around 9 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of E Vine Street near Portage Street after receiving a report about a child with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and her parents were taking her to the hospital. Responding officers learned that the 3-year-old girl and her sibling were left alone in a vehicle that was parked outside a home. A firearm that was legally owned by a CPL holder was stored in the center console. While in the vehicle, the girl shot herself. KDPS said the girl is in critical condition and expected to recover. No arrests have been made, KDPS said. The firearm and vehicle are in police custody. Gun reform legislation takes effect Tuesday 'While we are relieved to hear the child is on the path to recovery, this incident could have ended far worse,' Danielle Guilds, captain of the Criminal Investigations Division, said in a release. 'We urge all firearm owners to take every precaution to ensure their weapons are properly secured and inaccessible to children.' The case remains under investigation. Court document: Witness identified suspect in deadly shooting
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a witness pointed them to the suspect in a deadly shooting in Kalamazoo last week that left a man dead. Lamone Demetrius Hickman Jr., 19, was charged Monday with murder and weapons charges in the of Marktavion Perry-Bennett. Suspect charged in shooting death of 21-year-old in Kalamazoo The shooting happened Thursday night in the area of N. Park Street and W. Paterson Street. A court document says Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers found Perry-Bennett with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to the court document, witnesses told police the shooter was in a black Chrysler 300. According to the court document, a witness called 911 the night of the shooting and asked to talk to investigators. When speaking to a detective, the witness reported hearing five gunshots. '(The witness) confirmed Hickman Jr was the shooter,' the document reads in part. The witness reported seeing Hickman put a handgun in his waistband and then say something about having shot Perry-Bennett, according to the document. Police said they pulled up Hickman's cellphone records, which put him in the area of the shooting when it happened. He was found in Muskegon Friday and arrested. Family recalled Perry-Bennett, 21, as 'sweet,' 'gentle and respectful and kind.' They said he was well-known around his neighborhood and loved to spend time with extended family. Proposed ordinance aims to tow ‘X-Train' vehicles in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A proposed city ordinance in Kalamazoo looks to make it easier for officers to tow vehicles involved in mobile nuisance parties known as 'X-trains.' The change would allow the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety to impound a vehicle used in a nuisance party later, when it's easier for police to tow it. Officers will send a warning letter to the registered vehicle owner. If that warning is violated within six months, the car will be on the list to be impounded. If the car is parked on private property, police would need a warrant to impound the car. KDPS Chief David Boysen said the mobile parties put people at risk. 'You have crowds of cars blocking the streets. We can't get emergency apparatus down the streets. So if you have a medical emergency and you live in those neighborhoods, we can't get to you,' he said. Drone video released by the department in 2022 shows lines of cars filling a neighborhood, grinding traffic to a halt. Boysen said the issue has been improving as the department's strategy evolves. Previous strategies involved officers issuing tickets or making arrests at the street parties, but it was a tax on resources. 'We'd have to do giant overtime operations, bringing a lot of people, which was effective the nights we did it. But the next weekend, when we couldn't sustain that kind of staffing, it was back to normal,' said Chief Boysen. In 2023, the department focused on the vehicles rather than just the people involved. Police used photos and video to keep track of cars at the parties. A warning letter was sent to owners, which Boysen said was a major deterrent. 'A lot of those folks that got those warning letters, some of them didn't even know that maybe a family member, friend was using their car and maybe they were asleep and their car was being used to do illegal activity that they weren't aware of,' he said. Repeat offenders risked seeing their car towed. A few cars were impounded during the X-Train parties, but that had a limit. 'During those instances where there's a lot of cars, it takes a lot of manpower to even impound cars,' said the KDPS chief. 'You get them stand by the car, wait for a tow truck to arrive. We have to worry about the crowds and keep the officers safe and the scene safe. So I think people realize it's kind of safety in numbers,' he said. Boysen said officers would send requests through the courts to impound cars after the events. The proposed ordinance change would streamline that process by giving officers the authority to impound the vehicle if there was 'reasonable cause' that it was used at the party. 'We really finally found a strategy that works,' Boysen said. During the city commission meeting, commissioners said they wanted to see an end to the mobile parties. One community member expressed opposition to the change. They said the change seemed geared at protecting property rather than people. 'This isn't just about property value, this isn't just about people having a good time in the street,' said Commissioner Chris Praedel. 'These are people who have a home and who are blocked into their home at all hours of the night. Who have sleeping children, who have to get up to work the next day. Who wonder how the heck they are going to get out of their house if there's an emergency. How the heck are they going to get back home?' he said.
