Hyderabad: BJP SC and ST Morcha leaders on Tuesday staged a protest and presented a representation to the Telangana Council for Higher Education (TGCHE) Chairman Prof V Balakista Reddy seeking the council's intervention on the private engineering colleges collecting exuberant fees from the students. They highlighted the serious issue where 17 prominent private engineering colleges in Telangana are illegally selling B Category (Management Quota) and C Category (NRI Quota) seats for crores of rupees, in violation of current government regulations. They called for an immediate inquiry and strict action against these colleges, which have commodified education. BJP ST Morcha State president, Dr Kalyan Nayak and SC Morcha State President Kondeti Sridhar met with Prof V Balakista Reddy and submitted a representation explaining in detail how several private engineering colleges in the state are charging SC/ST students between Rs 10-15 lakh for seats without adhering to the minimum reservation norms. Later, addressing the media, they demanded stringent action against administrators who exploit students and violate regulations. The leaders emphasised that if the practice of turning education into a business and neglecting the needs of economically disadvantaged SC/ST students does not cease immediately, the BJP ST and SC Morchas will organise state-wide protests soon.

Kishan Reddy demands proper maintenance of streetlights
Union Minister of Coal and Mines and Telangana BJP president G. Kishan Reddy on Tuesday accused the State government of neglecting basic civic amenities in the twin cities, citing widespread complaints about non-functional streetlights and irregular drinking water supply. Speaking to the media after meeting with colony welfare associations and slum dwellers in areas such as Jubilee Hills, Vengal Rao Nagar and Srinagar Colony, the Secunderabad MP said residents voiced a range of concerns, including power issues, damaged internal roads and poor sewerage infrastructure. Mr. Kishan Reddy said non-functioning streetlights appear to be a common issue across all areas, with no resolution in sight. He claimed that officials cited a shortage of funds as the reason. Criticising the poor state of civic amenities in the capital region, he said it reflects the inefficiency of the Congress government. He also mocked the idea of a command control room when basic infrastructure, such as CCTV installation in colonies, is pending. He urged the government to take immediate steps to restore street lighting and ensure CCTV connectivity to help prevent crimes such as chain snatching and eve teasing. Engineering seats In a separate press meet, ST Morcha president Kalyan Nayak has urged the state council of higher education to take action against 17 engineering colleges for not following the rule of reservation in Category 'B' (management) and Category 'C' (NRI quota). Instead, the colleges concerned have been charging hefty fees from SC/ST students, he added. The government has failed in allotting proper land for setting up of a sewage treatment plant or dump yard in municipalities, as a result of which it has been unable to take advantage of the Centre's grants, bemoaned MLC Anji Reddy.

State BJP ST Morcha asks DGP to take action against firms selling spurious seeds
Hyderabad: The State BJP ST Morcha lodged a complaint with DGP Jitender Reddy demanding justice for tribal farmers who have suffered losses due to spurious seeds. A team of BJP ST Morcha leaders led by ST Morcha state president Dr Kalyan Nayak met the DGP on Monday and told him about the prevailing situation in the Venkatapuram agency areas of Mulugu district. He said 'For the past few months, companies such as SIMJANTA, HITECH, BAYER, and SIBI have been supplying fake seeds. Tribal farmers who relied on quality seeds have faced devastating losses. Tragically, some farmers, burdened by debt, have committed suicide. The morcha leader said that this is not an agricultural failure, but, 'a conspiracy by the corrupt state government machinery hand in glove with the seeds companies against innocent tribal communities.' They demanded registering criminal cases against the responsible companies under the PD Act, and farmers should be compensated. Measures must be taken to prevent such scams in the future. Further, they demanded the State government immediately compensate the farmers who lost 3,000 acres of crops, support 800 tribal farmers, and provide ex-gratia payments to the families of the five deceased farmers. Besides, criminal cases should be registered against the companies that supplied fake seeds under the Money Laundering Act, and against the company owners under the PEDIAC Act. Similarly, they demanded an investigation into the responsible government officials, and appropriate action should be taken. Control measures and awareness programs should be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future. Dr Kalyan Nayak criticised the state government, stating, 'Minister Seethakka's focus on sand quarries and interest in beauty competition and silence over the suicides of tribal farmers. Even the Agriculture Minister has not responded to this crisis. While the Chief Minister conducts reviews, he has completely ignored the problems of the tribal farmers, he alleged. BJP ST Morcha State general secretary Ravi Nayak Nenawat, state secretary Kunja Santosh, Mahesh Rupawat, Banoth Anusha, and Ramesh Nayak were part of the delegation.
