Computerised test centres speed up licensing process in Kelantan

KOTA BHARU: The opening of computerised test centres at driving institutes enables candidates to acquire their driving licenses more quickly through a systematic and efficient method, says Kelantan Driving Institute Association deputy president Kamaruddin Hassan. He said the government initiative had reduced waiting time for candidates and streamlined the license application process. 'At the academies with test centres, candidates have the opportunity to take their driving test right after finishing the Driver's Education Curriculum (KPP). In fact, if they fail, they can retake the test on the same day, unlike previously, where they had to make a new booking within a specific period. 'This digitalisation enables both the KPP test and the circuit test to be conducted in the same location, which saves time and provides greater convenience for candidates,' he told reporters after the launch of the KPP Test Centre at Institut Yakin Pandu Sdn Bhd today. Kamaruddin, the managing director of Akademi Memandu Anda Sdn Bhd and owner of the first driving institute in Kelantan to implement the new testing system, said that since its introduction six months ago, nearly 3,000 candidates had successfully obtained their driving licenses. Currently, three out of fifteen driving institutes in the state have computerised test centres. Meanwhile, Institut Yakin Pandu Sdn Bhd general manager Erniy Zulhayat Zulnaidi said implementing the digital system enhanced service integrity and supported the government's sustainability agenda. Through the Transport Ministry, the government introduced the digital test centre initiative last year to facilitate the acquisition of the Malaysian Driving License (LMM), which aligns with the public service digitalisation agenda.

Kelantan aims to draw tourists with pull-net fishing

KOTA BARU: Kelantan will revive traditional pull-net fishing, once a common practice among local fishermen, as a new tourism attraction along its beaches. State tourism, culture, arts and heritage committee chairman Datuk Kamaruddin Md Nor said the activity, which requires 20 to 30 people to haul a net along up to a kilometre of shoreline, allows visitors to participate directly rather than remain spectators. 'Pull-net fishing has largely faded from practice. 'We want to revive it not only as a cultural experience but as a healing and recreational activity that brings people together,' he told reporters at the launch of MATTA Fair Kelantan 2025 yesterday, Bernama reported. The initiative is part of the state's Indahnya Kelantan 2025 campaign, which includes 41 tourism events covering heritage, arts, sport, eco and community tourism. Kamaruddin noted the success of monsoon-season surfing introduced at Pantai Kemasin in Bachok last year, which drew more than 3,000 visitors, as a sign of growing interest in niche tourism. The three-day MATTA Fair, which focuses on island destinations and ecotourism, targets RM5mil in sales and is expected to attract around 5,000 visitors. Separately, Kamaruddin said the National Heritage Department is awaiting funding approval from the Finance Ministry to begin repairs on the Sultan Ismail Suspension Bridge in Kuala Krai, which is over a century old and reportedly at risk of collapse. He said the department has completed a full structural assessment and submitted a funding request, expressing hope that restoration work would begin soon.

Book paying tribute to national carrier sells 500 copies ahead of launch

On his left is Kamaruddin. — Bernama AHEAD of its official launch, nearly 500 copies of a book paying tribute to the legacy of Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) were sold through pre-orders. The Malaysia Airlines We Built was authored by over 70 former staff who served the national carrier up until 2015. It chronicles MAS' golden era through personal stories, historical insights, and reflections on the collective mission to transform it into a world-class airline. The book was officially launched at Kelab Golf Negara Subang in Kelana Jaya, Selangor, by former MAS deputy chairman Tan Sri Sulaiman Sujak, who was accompanied by former managing director Datuk Kamaruddin Ahmad, according to a Bernama report. Also present were former executive vice-president (group finance) S. Suppiah, along with many other former MAS staff as well as guests. The book traces MAS' journey from its founding on Oct 1, 1972, highlighting the dedication, sacrifices and pioneering spirit of the people who helped build the airline. It offers insights into how Malaysia's homegrown aviation workforce built the airline that once flew across six continents and was an internationally acclaimed, award-winning national icon for many years. According to the Malaysia Airlines Retirees Association (Masra), these local talents formed the backbone of a dedicated team that supported the nation's aspiration to develop MAS into a world-class airline, surpassing the expectations of both Malaysians and the global aviation community. 'These homegrown professionals later became highly sought-after by aviation-related organisations worldwide, as their experience at MAS was widely recognised and respected,' Masra said in a media statement. 'This recognition was fine testament to the airline's commitment to fulfilling Malaysia's aspiration of developing a highly skilled workforce for heavy industries. 'This pioneering success was a catalyst for the subsequent establishment of other similar industries in the country,' the statement said. In his speech, Suppiah, who led the book project team, recalled the early years of MAS, describing them as challenging and filled with sacrifice but driven by the team's strong desire to learn, which led to their rapid success. 'Other airlines have openly acknowledged that MAS produced some of the best pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, and in-flight crew with the golden touch. 'Hopefully, the experiences shared in this book will inspire future generations, even as we recognise that changes are needed in several areas to keep pace with technological advances in aviation and related sector.'
