Kgothatso Montjane wins Roland-Garros wheelchair doubles title

South Africa's Kgothatso Montjane and her Japanese doubles partner Yui Kamiji triumphed 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 over China's Xiaohui Li and Ziying Wang at Roland-Garros to secure their second French Open doubles title. After the match, Montjane expressed that it had been a tough match – and a long month. 'I'm tired. It's been a month of tennis preparing for this tournament.' Montjane outlined how it was a challenge playing again with Kamiji since their last pairing came back in November 2024. 'Doing it with Yui was special as we didn't play together in Australia. 'Happy that we were able to hold our nerves and get over the line. 'We needed to make it work. 'It's always a challenge for us not playing together very often and living in two different countries.' Their combination does not always click immediately. 'It takes us longer to click. I'm glad that we made it work.' Montjane described how their body language was a key factor in their win as well as staying in the moment. 'It was quite tense for us. 'I think it was a reflection of our body language. It looked like we didn't have answers, but we kept pushing each other and taking it in on the change overs. 'Not getting in our heads allowed us to be more composed and helped us to get the momentum back.' Montjane and Kamiji had never played against their Chinese opponents before. 'It was the first time we had played both of them. 'So, we didn't know what to expect.' Montjane believed that not having played against them before helped them. 'It enabled is to figure it out as we went. The more we could see them play, the more we could adjust our play to take it to them.' Montjane was feeling the pinch after the win. She had an ice pack on her upper back during our interview. 'This body is quite old. It's been a month of tennis so I can understand how the body feels the way it does.' Montjane was grateful for her body's durability. 'It managed to carry me through one more final match.' Montjane outlined that she was worried about her body prior to the final. 'I was worried about how my body was going to perform.' Montjane was unsure about how she would celebrate the win. 'Yui has a singles final later so, hopefully she can win that event and we can make it a double celebration.' Montjane is proudly South African. 'It's always an honour to represent South Africa because there are not a lot of us out here.' Montjane is motivated to inspire others in South Africa. 'We are out her trying to show the world that we have a place in this sport. 'For us back home, I feel that tennis is not that popular. 'So, the least that we can do out here is to try and motivate the next generation to not lose hope to keep trying until they get to this level.' Montjane now heads back to Pretoria to rest up, allow her body to recover, and to prepare for Wimbledon. Good luck KG with your recovery and with your preparations for Wimbledon. South Africa is very proud of your achievements.
