Powerful storm slams Batavia, leaving behind damage

KANE COUNTY - Lifelong Batavians say they've never seen damage like this in their neighborhood. A powerful storm on Sunday happened within seconds, shutting off power to 1,800 residents. The aftermath included trees snapped in half and powerlines grounded, making streets impassable. The storm made its mark just before 3 p.m. "It was quick. I was outside messing around. I heard thunder and good lightning and said, 'I'm gonna go inside,'" said Arnie Anderson. Residents saw two-inch-size hail and endured 70 mile per hour winds. At Carlisle and Jackson, three hours after the storm, utility cables were seen wrapped around trees as storm debris was seen everywhere in sight. A number of homes were left with roof damage. "It sounded like our house was inside the drying machine. I couldn't see out my windows in any direction," said Layla Brown. Families spent the afternoon and evening clearing what they could. Tree removal crews were seen working hard as well. Some roads remained blocked off as utility trucks addressed power outages. The good news is despite the widespread destruction, there were no injuries. As of 9 p.m., ComEd reported 38 homes still without power.

Chicago weather: Temps soar well into the 80s by midweek

CHICAGO - It was a busy Sunday afternoon with severe storms in parts of Chicagoland. During the early to midafternoon hours, a severe storm tracked through DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, and Cook counties. The hardest hit area was Batavia in Kane County, where the storm produced 70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail. A cold front is moving through the region this evening, and clearing skies are expected behind the frontal boundary. Temperatures will drop into the mid 50s tonight under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Monday will be pleasant, but a few showers and storms will once again be possible. While severe weather isn't expected, storms will be capable of heavy rain and gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Tuesday and Wednesday look great with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. Tuesday will be in the upper 70s and then we're in the upper 80s on Wednesday. Scattered showers and storms return Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with temperatures in the mid 80s on Thursday, then dropping to the mid to upper 70s Friday through the weekend.

Powerful storm rips through Batavia leaving a trail of destruction

BATAVIA, Ill. — A powerful storm swept through Batavia, causing significant damage just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The storm brought damaging winds and hail, resulting in multiple trees down, branches and limbs toppled over onto houses and cars and even mailboxes ripped out of the ground. Winds reached about 80 miles per hour in Batavia, which is on the Kane and DuPage County line. 'We rushed to the basement and stayed away from the windows. We instantly heard all of the cracking around us. We've never seen weather like this before,' Nick Duda said. Duda says his family lost most of their trees and some windows in the storm, and that their power is totally out. Those caught behind the wheel as the storm unfolded were faced with very low visibility on the roads as power lines were also snapped by the wind. Crews are currently out fixing power lines and beginning the clean-up process. There are 50 reported outages in the area affecting around 3,000 customers. In true community fashion, neighbors are already out with chainsaws offering a helping hand to those chopping up limbs and branches that have fallen down. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Zimmermann, Hart homer as Canaries beat Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (CANARIES) — Peter Zimmermann and Mike Hart each homered and Tanner Brown struck out eight as the Canaries topped Kane County 5-2 on Saturday. The Cougars opened the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the first inning but Zimmermann drilled a two-run shot in the second and Sioux Falls wouldn't trail after that. Kane County tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the fifth before the Birds took the lead for good in the bottom half. Jabari Henry tripled with two outs and scored on a base hit from Josh Rehwaldt. Hart smacked a solo homerun with one out in the seventh inning and Calvin Estrada followed with a sacrifice fly. Brown scattered six hits over six innings to earn his second win while Kody Dalen, Will Levine and Christian Cosby each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. The Canaries are now 13-14 and will look to sweep the series Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pedestrian killed after being hit by van in Kane County, deputies say

A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a van early Monday morning in Kane County. The sheriff's office said just before 4:30 a.m., deputies responded to a car versus pedestrian crash near the intersection of Farnsworth Avenue and Summit Avenue in Aurora Township. Initial reports indicated that a white 2017 GMC work van was heading southbound on Farnsworth Avenue when it hit a pedestrian who was also walking southbound in the roadway along the fog line. The pedestrian, identified by the sheriff's office as Samson Isom, 42, of Aurora, was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and later died. The driver of the van, a 36-year-old man also of Aurora, was taken to Ascension Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No citations were issued. Deputies said it is not clear if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing by the Kane County Sheriff's Office Investigations Division. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Kane County Investigations Division at 630-444-1103.
