Kansas Firefighters Museum statue hit, damaged by car

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A statue honoring fallen firefighters in Kansas was hit and damaged by a car early Wednesday. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at the Kansas Firefighters Museum in the 1300 block of S. Broadway. The Wichita Police Department tells KSN News that a 39-year-old man was found breathing but unresponsive following the crash. He was taken to the hospital. 'Somebody driving down Broadway had, from what we understand, might have been a medical emergency, lost control of the vehicle, went over the curb and ended up straight into our fallen firefighter memorial statue,' said Tod Newlin, Kansas Firefighters Museum president. Police believe the car was traveling north when it jumped the curb, hit a street sign, and crashed into the statue. The cause of the crash is under investigation. 'We hope the driver is ok,' Newlin added. Kansas Firefighters Museum vandalized In April, the memorial was vandalized. It was able to be cleaned. The statue has been at the museum for approximately 23 to 24 years, according to Newlin. 'If the statue wasn't there, the individual would have driven straight into our museum. That would have been very devastating for us. The building itself is over 115 years old,' Newlin said. For more Kansas news, click here. Kansas Firefighters Museum vandalized

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Firefighters Museum is speaking out after its historic building and memorial grounds were recently vandalized in an act the organization is calling 'an attack on the legacy and respect' of Kansas firefighting history. Housed in a 115-year-old firehouse at 1300 S. Broadway, the Kansas Firefighters Museum highlights the bravery and sacrifice of the state's firefighters, featuring a memorial for those who have died in the line of duty. 'When art and self-expression turns to vandalism, specifically the defacement of our 115-year-old building and the memorial dedicated to the fallen Kansas firefighters… it becomes an attack on the legacy and respect that this space represents,' the museum said in a social media post. The museum says it is working with local authorities to investigate the incident and is calling on the community to stand united in protecting historical landmarks and spaces of remembrance. 'We believe in the power of art,' the museum said in the post. 'But we also believe in the importance of respect — for history and for the fallen.' Suspect charged after historic cannon stolen, damaged The Wichita Fire Department described the incident as 'awful.' 'This building, the memorial, all of it, represents all who came before us and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice,' WFD said in a Facebook post. The museum encourages anyone with information about the vandalism to contact the Wichita Police Department.
