Des Moines police investigating officer-involved shooting on city's south side
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the city's south side Thursday afternoon. According to DMPD, officers responded to a 911 call at around 4:24 p.m. that was made in the Watrous South neighborhood. Police said the 911 call didn't provide much information and was responded to as an unknown problem. Kanzi the bonobo at Ape Initiative in Des Moines has died About 10 minutes after the 911 call was made, responding officers watched a male assault a female near SW 9th Street and Rittenhouse Street, the DMPD said. An officer attempted to intervene and the male fled from the officer. At around 4:35 p.m. a second officer located the male suspect at the intersection of SW 11th Street and Wade Street. According to DMPD, as the officer tried to take the suspect into custody an altercation ensued and the officer fired his handgun, hitting the suspect. Police said the officer involved also sustained injuries, but did not specify what those injuries were. Both the suspect and the officer have been transported to area hospitals. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been contacted to lead the investigation into the shooting. No additional information has been released. Bonobo at Ape Initiative in Des Moines has died
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Ape Cognition & Conservation (Ape) Initiative announced on social media Wednesday that one of their bonobos has died. In a post on Facebook, the initiative said that Kanzi, a 44-year-old bonobo, died Tuesday afternoon. According to the post, Kanzi didn't show any signs of discomfort or illness, and had even been chasing another bonobo around their tower that morning. Ankeny man identified as pedestrian who was hit by vehicle Staff located Kanzi unresponsive after he and another bonobo were laying down and grooming each other. The initiative said in the post that the cause of Kanzi's death is not known, but he was being treated for heart disease. A necropsy is being performed. The initiative said that the world lost a treasure and that their staff is grieving the loss of Kanzi. 'Our team is absolutely devasted,' the Facebook post says in part. 'We are focused on ensuring Kanzi's bonobo family members and human caregivers receive the care and support that they need. We ask for time and patience as we grieve the passing of our dearest friend, Kanzi. Kanzi means so much to so many people.' The initiative also announced that it's been working with Wildstar Films to create an exclusive documentary about Kanzi's life. More details about the film will be released at a later date. Ape Initiative is a non-profit organization located in Des Moines that's solely dedicated to the conservation and study of bonobos, an endangered species.
