Ex-council chief happy to see launch of book on Kapit Peace Keeping Agreement 1924
Lating describes the publication as 'holding a profound significance from the perspectives of Dayak heritage, legacy and continuity'. KAPIT (May 31): Former chairman of Kapit District Council (KDC) Lating Minggang is happy to see book on Kapit Peace Keeping Agreement 1924 being finally published and made available to the public. Lating, who served in the council between 2019 and May this year, described the publication as 'holding a profound significance from the perspectives of Dayak heritage, legacy and continuity'. Documented by the Dayak Cultural Foundation (DCF) and Tun Jugah Foundation, the book 'Commemorating a Century of Kapit Peacemaking (1924-2024)' details the event on Nov 16, 1924, where a peacemaking ceremony in Kapit signalled an end to the conflicts among the indigenous communities in the rural region. It also commemorated the historic occasion and its 100th anniversary celebration in December last year, in Kapit. Works Minister and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi unveiled the book at a ceremony held in Kuching on Friday. The authors are Dr Regina Garai, Neilson llan Mersat, Peter Mulok Ked, Janet Rata Noel, Stanley Lingoh Gara and Bibiana Motey Senang. 'It was a conscious decision by Dayak leaders to forge a new path. 'Commemorating it acknowledges their foresight, wisdom and leadership in prioritising peace over prolonged conflict. 'It also highlights a period where traditional systems of governance and conflict resolution (albeit influenced by the Brooke administration) were instrumental in achieving stability,' said Lating. Call on Kapit District Council to expedite construction of new Song Market
Nanta (fourth right), joined by other dignitaries, during the official opening ceremony of the Terabai Market. KAPIT (May 14): Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called on the Kapit District Council (KDC) to expedite the construction of the new Song Market. He said this is because hawkers in Song deserved a good place to sell their wares, such as the recently completed Terabai Market at Jalan Airport here. 'Many enterprising people here actively pursue socio-economic activities such as handicrafts or planting vegetables or fruits to generate extra income. Previously, they would sell their goods by the roadside or open spaces (at Tai Pek Kong Deity Hock Leong Len temple and CCK Cold Storage), come rain or shine, which was not conducive. 'Now, they have a proper place to exhibit and sell their products,' he said on Monday after officiating the opening of the RM20 million dry-and-wet market. He also advised hawkers trading at Terabai Market to be disciplined and keep it hygienic and clean, as the environment must be conducive to attract customers. The Kapit MP added him and elected representatives in the division were working together to bring development here, as they understood the needs of the people. 'As Upper Rajang Development Agency (Urda) chairman, together with my deputy Datuk Liwan Lagang, we work together with the other MPs and assemblymen for the people and as a team—nobody is superman. 'For example, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong and myself, we lobby for project funds to develop Kapit from the federal government, while the local assemblymen bid for development funds from the state government,' he said. He said projects funded by the federal government announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he visited Kapit last year include the new Kapit police station and Nanga Yong Bridge. Also present were Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Native Customs and Laws) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang; Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai; a political secretary to the Premier, Watson Awan Jalai; Nanta's political secretary Ambrose Abong Bugek; Kapit Resident Elvis Didit and his deputy Robert Liman; KDC chairman Andy Lawrence; Kapit district police chief DSP Rohana Nanu; Kapit district officer Cerisologo Sabut; and Song district officer Harry Bruce Edwin. alexander nanta linggi hawkers Kapit District Council lead Song Market
