Left parties hold protests against slum demolitions, demand rehabilitation of inhabitants
Left parties and activists protested at Jantar Mantar on Thursday against 'forced' demolition and eviction drives being carried out in the national capital.
Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat stated that the BJP had promised 'Jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan' (house in place of slum) to the poor, but contrary to its claim, the BJP-led Delhi government was demolishing slums without providing rehabilitation to the slum dwellers.
'This exposes the anti-poor and anti-people policy of the Delhi government. Lakhs of people are being displaced and pushed towards insecurity, unemployment and homelessness. This is a direct violation of the Constitution and human rights,' she said.
Ms Karat also demanded compensation or alternative housing for the families who have been displaced without rehabilitation and urged women to participate in this movement in large numbers.
CPI(M) Delhi secretary Anurag Saxena said the Central and Delhi governments are bulldozing the slums in the name of 'so-called development', environmental protection and beautification. 'If bulldozing of slums is not stopped immediately, the protests will be intensified,' he warned.
Several leaders from CPI, CPI(ML), and other Left parties participated in the protest. When reached, there was no response from the Delhi BJP over the allegations.
