LG OLED And LCD TVs Are About To Get Easier To Use
LG has announced today that it has signed a deal with voice AI company Kardome that should make the South Korean brand's popular range of OLED and LCD smart TVs even easier to use. The webOS smart platform carried by LG's OLED and LCD TVs has long been regarded as one of the best in the TV world, making it as easy as possible to navigate the vast quantity of different content sources available to today's TV viewer. As the sheer quantity of content providers continues to explode, though, even the logical and attractive onscreen menus of webOS have started to find it difficult to keep finding ways of getting you to all the content you want to watch as quickly and slickly as possible. Which is where voice recognition and control comes in. Despite being hurt by a number of abortive early stabs at voice recognition in decades gone by, voice recognition when done well can actually provide a uniquely direct way of accessing content and features on modern TVs. Meaning that LG Electronics' new deal with Kardome has the potential to take LG's WebOS smart TV charms to a whole other level. The Kardome Spatial Hearing AI technology that LG is going to be integrating into its OLED and LCD TVs (with other smart devices, including appliances, audio products and in-car entertainment systems set to follow) is essentially designed to enable smart devices to hear like humans do, applying unique spatial awareness and voice isolation elements to its 'listening' capabilities that are claimed to deliver more natural, seamless and accurate voice user interfaces. In particular, by being able to isolate and identify different individual voices even in potentially loud and chaotic real-world settings means that Kardome's Spatial Hearing AI system is able to understand commands more quickly and accurately, delivering a more responsive, accurate and consistent voice control experience that should make talking to your TV a much more intuitive and, most importantly, successful experience than it currently is. Improving the rate of successful engagement outcomes is key to getting users to engage with voice control systems - and it's especially important in the relatively passive world of TV sets, where even just a handful of failed or frustrating voice interactions can be enough to ensure that someone vows never to bother trying to talk to their TV again. Even though the long-term benefits of bypassing or short-cutting onscreen menus with voice commands can be overwhelmingly positive. I've long thought that LG's own existing ThinQ AI system is actually one of the better voice recognition and control systems in the TV world, so if LG thinks Kardome's system delivers enough of a performance improvement to warrant signing a deal to get the system onto its TVs then it's hard not to expect great things from it. It has not been confirmed yet exactly which LG TVs will be the first to integrate Kardome's Spatial Hearing AI system, although Kardome tells me that it expects the first products to reach consumers 'by the end of 2025'.
