Optometrist at Worcester healthcare provider shares tips for eye care this spring

A LEADING optometrist has shared her top tips for protecting eyes this spring. Karen Dewhurst, from Worcester-based community healthcare provider CHEC, highlighted the challenges the season brings, from battling allergies to the increased UV exposure. Ms Dewhurst said: "Spring is synonymous with blooming flowers and rising pollen counts, which can trigger allergic conjunctivitis. "To minimise discomfort as best you can, monitor local pollen levels and limit outdoor activities on high pollen days." Wrap-around sunglasses are suggested as a barrier against pollen, providing an extra layer of protection. For those feeling the effects, a cool compress, ocular lubricants, and avoiding rubbing the eyes can help ease irritation. Hydration, too, is crucial, as dry eyes can become more susceptible to UV damage. Ms Dewhurst said: "The sun's rays become stronger in spring, increasing your exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which can be harmful to your eyes. "Take steps to defend your eyes by ensuring your sunglasses have 100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays." As the weather warms, outdoor activities and spring winds can also contribute to dry eyes. Lubricating eye drops and keeping screen time in check with the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more) are recommended. With many people using spring as a time to clean, it's crucial to be mindful of potential irritants. Ms Dewhurst said: "Many of us use this time of year to undertake a spring clean, but this often involves using harsh chemicals which can irritate or damage your eyes." She advises wearing protective eyewear when using cleaning products, and ensuring areas are well-ventilated. It's not just external factors that can affect our eyes. Regular eye tests are recommended to ensure eye health and keep prescriptions up to date. Ms Dewhurst said: "As well as protecting yourself against all these potential triggers to your eye health, spring is also a great time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam." The clinic is located at St Martin's Quarter. More eye health advice can be found at
