UPS confirms building closures, shift cuts in 4 states

UPS is closing five facilities in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, plus a sortation shift at an Ohio building, in the coming months as part of its sweeping network overhaul. The following locations will shutter or see operations reduced due to the company's "Network Reconfiguration" initiative, spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill confirmed in an email to Supply Chain Dive: Location Result Closing date Employees impacted 2006 River Road, New Kensington, Pennsylvania Building closure May 10 Unknown 2129 Rockdale Lane, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania Building closure May 16 Unknown 647 Summer St., Boston, Massachusetts Building closure May 23 62 20 N. The union's general president, Sean O'Brien, warned in a statement last week that if any planned job cuts 'attempt to go after hard-fought, good-paying Teamsters jobs, UPS will be in for a hell of a fight.' UPS is working to place as many affected employees as possible in other positions, according to Hill. More closures could be revealed in the coming weeks, as UPS is planning to shutter 73 facilities by June's end and cut roughly 20,000 positions this year. The cuts are part of the carrier's efforts to match its U.S. network's capacity with expected volume declines. UPS is reducing the amount of volume it delivers for Amazon, its largest customer, by June 2026. UPS is helping its largest customers adjust their operating plans to mitigate any disruptions from the building closures while encouraging smaller shippers to use alternative drop off points, CEO Carol Tomé said during an earnings call last week. 'While this may be the largest network reconfiguration in our history, we've got experience that gives us confidence that we will be able to complete our plan with very little customer disruption and at the right cost to serve,' Tomé said on the call. UPS to close 2 Kansas facilities as it scrutinizes network footprint

This story was originally published on Supply Chain Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Supply Chain Dive newsletter. UPS will close two facilities in Kansas later this year as part of an ongoing push to streamline its U.S. network, a spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive. The carrier's location at 2601 East Wyatt Earp Blvd. in Dodge City is shutting down May 20. Additionally, UPS is shuttering a facility at 331 NE Industrial Lane in Lawrence on June 17. The company has not disclosed the number of workers that will be impacted by the decision, and no Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter has been published on the matter as of Monday. "We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions," UPS spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill said in an email. "We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support." The closures will add to operations cuts UPS has deployed since last year, with the carrier closing several sortation shifts throughout the U.S. as it makes its network more automated. Hill said the carrier's plans for the two Kansas facilities specifically are tied to a roughly $1 billion efficiency push executives mentioned during a January earnings call. "The changes underway include reassessing a small percentage of our U.S. operations," UPS said in a statement on its website. "Our employees and customers remain a top priority for us during this process, and we will continue to provide industry-leading service to customers in every community we serve." Rival FedEx has been undergoing its own operations overhaul, closing several ship centers as part of its Network 2.0 initiative to merge its separate Express and Ground networks. UPS to temporarily close Portland package facility for major retrofit

UPS plans to temporarily close its Swan Island package facility in Portland, Oregon, and lay off up to 244 workers as the integrated logistics carrier moves forward with consolidating and automating facilities under a network optimization strategy announced a year ago. The parcel giant on Friday notified Oregon authorities that it will close the facility on June 20 and release 244 unionized workers, according to the Office of Workforce Investments. That figure represents the total number of employees who could potentially lose their jobs, not the total number of workers at the site, UPS (NYSE: UPS) spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill said in an email exchange. 'We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions. Our employees are extremely important to us, and we understand the impact this may have on them and their families. We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support. We expect the enhanced facility to reopen in 2026,' she said. Kara Deniz, a spokesperson for the Teamsters union, said the facility is slated to reopen in September 2026. UPS last year said it plans to eliminate 200 sort centers over five years and route parcels handled at those facilities to more modern ones. Warehouses outfitted with smart package technologies – autonomous guided vehicles, automated sort systems and systems that prioritize processing for specific customer requirements without manual intervention – have 30% to 35% more effective capacity than a traditional warehouse building. Consolidating package flow into fewer facilities will reduce the amount of time packages need physical handing and improve asset utilization, according to management. As of March 2023, the company had 63 automation projects on the table for completion by 2028. UPS last April closed a package terminal in Portland and laid off 331 workers because it wasn't busy enough. Click here for more FreightWaves/American Shipper stories by Eric Kulisch.
