Iowa State Patrol to be working overtime for 4/20

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – While many families will be celebrating Easter this Sunday, April 20, some people will be celebrating that day for a different reason. 4/20 is a day where people smoke lots of marijuana. 24 states in the U.S. allow the use of recreational marijuana, but in no state can you drive after consumption. However, according to AAA, roughly 85% of cannabis users admit to driving the same day they smoked. Sioux City Fire Rescue nationally accredited for third time For this reason, the Iowa State Patrol will be working overtime this weekend to ensure the roads are safe. 'It's just like anything we use for the message of, if you're gonna be drinking, don't get behind the wheel,' trooper Karen Yaneff said. 'And if it comes down to the point, even if you're a passenger and you find out that the driver has been using, you're probably gonna want to make arrangements, because obviously your life is potentially gonna be in danger. So obviously we prefer you not to use, but we know with this weekend it's potentially gonna happen.' If caught driving while under the influence of marijuana, not only could you temporarily or permanently lose your driver's license, you could face jail time as well. SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — St. Patrick's Day is upon us, and state law enforcement officers are reminding people to drink responsibly. According to the U.S. Department Of Transportation, 74 people died due to drunk driving during St. Patrick's Day in 2022. To ensure drivers are safe, local and state officers are putting more vehicles on the road. Cimpl halts harvest operations in Yankton impacting more than 250 employees The Iowa State Patrol says that because this year's St. Patrick's Day falls on a Monday, it's hard to tell how busy it'll get. 'I don't know if the bars will be, you know, your typical Friday, Saturday night crowd,' trooper Karen Yaneff said. 'But I think, a lot we're going to be early enough just because a lot of them have to work the next morning. You're still going to get some that will stay out late and probably didn't anticipate that part of it, but it'll be a busy afternoon in the evening.' Yaneff also says that if you grab a drink, you should either call a friend or a ride share service to get yourself home. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
