Norfolk woman, 37, killed in Newport News shooting, police say
NEWPORT NEWS — A Norfolk woman has been identified as the person killed Sunday night in a shooting in Newport News. Police say Karen Yvonne Watkins, 37, of Norfolk, was shot in the area of 27th Street and Wickham Avenue, in the East End section of the city. Officers responded to the area around 11:21 p.m. Sunday night after a ShotSpotter activation. That system is designed to pick up audio signals of shots fired and determine where they are coming from. When they arrived, officers found Watkins suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She died after being taken to a local hospital. The investigation is ongoing, police say.
