Frozen Buick that became a viral sensation on White Bear Lake is finally removed

After it became somewhat of a viral sensation and curiosity, a car that was partially submerged in White Bear Lake was finally pulled clear on Thursday, The 2008 Buick Lucerne's owner had the car pulled from the lake by a private tow company, according to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office. The owner had 30 days since it fell into the ice (Jan. 27) to remove it. Otherwise, the 41-year-old would have been sent a bill from the sheriff's office for towing it out. The car was about 14 feet deep in the water around 400 yards from Bellaire Beach, but became a point of interest when extreme cold caused the lake to freeze around the sedan after it became stuck."It was quite the spectacle, and it took about three hours. Once the Lucerne was liberated at about noon, our deputies fenced off the area around the hole and stuck a bunch of warning signs in the ice to alert everyone of the danger," the sheriff's office said. "If you're planning to head out on ice, know the lake (especially if you're going out at night), stay alert, and remember there is no such thing as 'safe ice,'" the sheriff's office stated. The sheriff's office said the owner was driving across the lake after dark on Jan. 27 when the car became stuck on an ice bridge and fell in. It first caught traction on social media, with video of the partially submerged sedan was first shared on Instagram by the Urban Ice Anglers' page. Karl Erickson, who organizes the 10,000 Ice Anglers Project — a free program that provides winter fishing experiences for thousands of kids — has continued to post videos of the car's journey from its time stuck in the lake to finally getting it pulled out on Thursday. The 2008 Buick Lucerne that has called White Bear Lake its home for nearly a month has gone viral since Erickson began posting photos and videos of it on social media. 'People on the internet love making memes and weird stuff and I thought, 'How about make a meme to raise awareness for the nonprofit [and ice safety]?' ' Erickson told the outlet. "I put it on Instagram, and it just went nuts, like a million views," Erickson told CBS News affiliate WCCO. "The reaction on social media's just been all over the place, 'Oh there's a dead body in there.' " Fans far and wide can rest assured that there's no dead body trapped in the car. A 41-year-old resident accidentally crashed his car through the ice, Ramsey County sheriff's deputies said on Jan. 27, reports the Star Tribune. The man only has a few days left to remove it before a 30-day deadline expires and promised to do so, but weather conditions have made the task more challenging. According to Erickson, the submerged car provides a safe haven for fish seeking shelter from predators, which has given his students the perfect opportunity to catch them. In a video shared to the Urban Ice Anglers Instagram account last week, students can be seen sitting in a tent placed over the car. Holes have been drilled in the ice, and their rods have successfully caught fish. Partially submerged car frozen in Twin Cities lake becomes viral curiosity

A viral curiosity from the Minnesota winter can be found in White Bear Lake, where a partially submerged car has become the subject of online fascination. The plight of the stricken sedan has been shared on Instagram by the Urban Ice Anglers' page for weeks now, with the youth ice fishing organization posting regular updates as the Buick became increasingly encased in ice during Minnesota's recent extreme cold. Karl Erickson, who organizes the 10,000 Ice Anglers Project — a free program that provides thousands of kids a winter fishing experience — posted videos this week showing efforts to get the car out of the ice near Bellaire Beach. The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office tells Bring Me The News the owner of the 2008 Buick Lucerne is responsible for its removal from the lake, but if he doesn't, its Water Patrol unit will use it as a training exercise and send the bill to the driver. According to the sheriff's office, the car became submerged on the lake on Jan. 27, and confirmed it was unoccupied when it was found. Police got in contact with the Buick's owner, a 41-year-old White Bear Lake man. He told officers he was driving across the lake when his front wheels broke through the ice and water started to come through the floorboards. "He exited the vehicle through the front driver's side window and walked to safety before getting a ride home," a Ramsey County Sheriff's spokesperson said. The man told the sheriff's office he plans to get the car removed from the lake but it still remains there as of Monday.

Car frozen into White Bear Lake becomes viral sensation

Cars on the ice are a common sight on White Bear Lake this time of year. But cars in the ice? That's out of the ordinary. "It's just such an interesting sight," Karl Erickson said. Erickson organizes the 10,000 Ice Anglers Project, a free program that gives thousands of kids a winter ice fishing experience that they wouldn't get otherwise. "The front end is on the bottom, and the back end is kind of encased in probably 12 to 15 inches of ice at this point," Erickson said. The story of exactly how this 2008 Buick Lucerne got here in the first place goes back to Jan. 27. Ramsey County sheriff's deputies said the driver of the car, a 41-year-old man from White Bear Lake, got out safely after his sedan broke through the ice. He allegedly told deputies he would get the car out. However, almost one month later, the car remains. Deputies said the owner of the car needs to somehow remove it, or he could soon face fines. Erickson has made the most of the iced-in Buick. His videos on the Urban Ice Anglers Instagram page have even gone viral. "I put it on Instagram, and it just went nuts, like a million views," Erickson said. "The reaction on social media's just been all over the place, 'Oh there's a dead body in there.'" Erickson said the car is even attracting fish, like bluegills, who may see the vehicle as safe cover from predators. The ice car is a good lesson as to why it's so important to check the ice before heading out, Erickson said, not only for the kids he teaches but clearly, adults as well. "That's why they say no ice is ever 100% safe and this is kind of one of those reasons that showcases, yeah that's true," Erickson said.
