Anna Sawai Names Zendaya as Her Ultimate Red Carpet Inspiration
Anna Sawai is a historymaker. The New Zealand-born and Japan-raised actress and singer recently became the first Japanese actress to win a Primetime Emmy when she received the Outstanding Lead Actress nod for her work in She's also a Cartier ambassador and, with stylist to the stars Karla Welch at her side, a minimalist red carpet maven. The 32-year-old turns out sleek and elevated ensembles whenever the situation calls for it, and her elegant takes on looks from Armani, Louis Vuitton and Dior have us paying attention. Candice Lake What's more, Sawai has also proved herself gracious in the face of social media adversity. Earlier this month, the internet was alight with discussion of her and Zendaya's gorgeous, but ultimately quite similar, With a busy summer ahead of her (she's set to film A24's next hit Enemies opposite internet boyfriends Austin Butler and Jeremy Allen White), we sat down with the laid-back star as she got ready for Cartier's En Équilibre launch in Stockholm. Candice Lake Can you talk me through what you're wearing this evening and what you're hoping to channel? I'm wearing a very feminine dress by Giambattista Valli. I'm really excited to wear this, because I heard that Valli himself is going to be there at the event. The dress is black so you can really see the jewelry shine. I'm wearing diamonds with rubellites inspired by bows. Bows are obviously weapons, signifying strength, but also feel very feminine—I love the balance. My hair and makeup is very simple which helps me feel like I'm still very much myself and it's all about the jewelry. I always like to channel elegance and finding the balance between femininity and strength. Anna Sawai by Candice Lake What is it like working with Karla Welch for your red carpet looks and how do you marry your off-duty personal style? Karla just really understands me. She has so many different clients and she dresses everyone very differently. I tend to wear things that are very simple in my day-to-day life. Like, right now, I'm just wearing a plain white tee with Cartier jewels. I wear Cartier jewelry every day—it makes me feel elevated and that I don't have to try hard with my outfits. Karla understands that I feel comfortable wearing things that are a little bit less loud. There was a time when I was about to wear something that felt like it wasn't really fitting the event. Karla told me, 'whatever you feel comfortable with,' and we did find something that felt a little bit more fitting, and I felt good about it. So there's never been a time when I stepped onto the carpet or event and just felt out of place. I've been I feel very lucky to say that. Karla is very supportive with choosing things that I feel good in. Candice Lake What are your off-duty wardrobe staples? I always travel with a white T-shirt. Karla actually gifted one to me and I loved it so much I bought a couple more. It's the Jackie Crewneck Tee from Michael Starr. It's 100 percent cotton and cropped. With plain T-shirts, I buy like two or three, because I know that I'm going to spill something. Wherever you are, whatever occasion it is, a white T-shirt, it's just something that you can always rely on. I like clean looks. [As for] the jewels, I wear the Candice Lake Who are your personal style and red carpet heroes? It's going to be funny talking about this now, because I think everyone's aware of what happened, but I love Zendaya's style so much. I think she's so stylish, so fun on [red] carpets. She always has this amazing theme—if she's promoting a movie, then she's wearing something that's related to that movie. I think she's so cool, but then in her day-to-day life, I feel like she was she's also just a simple gal, and I really just look up to her. I read that People like to make up stories like that because it's a little bit more interesting than people who are getting along. Candice Lake The thing is, she didn't even have to send me flowers, but she did because she just is that kind of person where she's trying to spread kindness, and I thought it was really cool. I wrote her a letter and sent her something back because I want to be like that. I recently saw a video of Zendaya [discussing] when she first met Rihanna, and she was talking about how Rihanna didn't have to be so sweet, but she was, and she was very inspired by her. [Now] she's doing the same to people like me, and so I just want to make sure that I'm doing the same. It's about supporting each other and uplifting one another. Related Stories From:

Hope for families as new medication rolled out to first Scottish children
Families of children living with a progressive muscle-wasting condition have welcomed the roll-out of a new drug that could slow the impact of the disease. They have been fighting for months to gain access to medication for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), which is found almost exclusively in boys. The condition has a massive impact on mobility and eventually begins to affect a patient's organs. The average life expectancy for someone with Duchenne is roughly 29 years. Givinostat, which can slow progression by months or even years, is currently awaiting approval for NHS use, but an early access programme (EAP) is available for those who qualify. Families had previously been told that limited resources would delay their children from receiving the treatment.A campaign put pressure on health boards and health secretary Neil Gray to find a way to speed up the was backed by high-profile Glasgow lawyer Aamer Anwar, who was prepared to support the families with legal the first of what's thought to be 30 eligible boys have begun to receive their first doses of givinostat. One of those is ten-year-old Riley Wilson from Angus. His 'Nana' Janice hopes the medication will make a big difference. She told STV News: 'I would have imagined he would have been in a wheelchair within a couple of years, but with this drug, hopefully that might be extended until he's into his mid-teens.'It's not a cure, we all know it's not a cure. But hopefully it will slow down the process of the disease and give them a lot longer on their feet.'Riley is feeling the impact of Duchenne – his aunt Joanne says stairs are 'a real struggle' for him.'He struggles to hold on, and if he's taking his (Nintendo) Switch or that upstairs, he needs a hand,' she the youngster is still able to do most of what he enjoys, like going to the park and playing football with his friends – something it's hoped givinostat will allow him to enjoy for for prescribing givinostat vary between health boards, but more are expecting to begin handing out the drug in the coming weeks. Eight-year-old Sam Millar and his parents, Stephen and Karla, have been at the forefront of the campaign. STV News Dad Stephen told STV News: 'We got a telephone call from Sam's consultant at the Sick Children's Hospital in Edinburgh to let us know that Sam will be getting the givinostat medication from the end of July, early August.'It's been very emotional. Immediately after the call, Karla just burst into tears, and I think that sums up what this means to us as a family.'Karla added: 'It's a bit like a weight has slightly lifted off your shoulders.'Obviously, the fight is not over until we have the medication in our hands and we start giving it to Sam.'While DMD is a rare condition, around 2,500 people in total around the UK are living with the disease. Campaigners hope givinostat can be given to more than the roughly 30 children currently set to receive the drug in said: 'It will take a wee while for all the boys to get this.'But the boys who are non-ambulant (unable to walk independently), they are now the ones who we need to fight for.'Emily Reuben, the chief executive of Duchenne UK, and Alex Johnson, the chief executive of Joining Jack, both have a son with said: 'There's something worse than having no treatment – and that's having a treatment, available to the NHS for free, but no one can work out how to administer it.'I'm delighted that clinics in Scotland have solved this problem and are committed to rolling out access to the EAP for their patients. 'Now is the time for the rest of the UK to follow Scotland's example and provide a plan and timescale to roll this out for everyone who is eligible.' Health secretary Neil Gray said: 'I understand this is an anxious time for the young people and their families and recognise how much it affects their lives. 'I welcome the roll-out of the early access programme for givinostat for eligible children who have been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and who are still walking. 'The Scottish Government wants all children and young people living with DMD to benefit from new medicines, such as givinostat, and live longer, fuller lives. Health Boards have now started to contact all families with children eligible under the current national early access programme, to set out the timelines involved. 'We continue to work with the four Health Boards providing regional services to those with DMD in order to support access to givinostat as soon as possible for all children who have been diagnosed with DMD, including those who are not able to walk.' Why pedestrian deaths are climbing as vehicles get bigger
Last December, Karla Molina sent her 2-year-old son Emmanuel out to run errands with his grandmother in Houston. They were crossing the street when a pickup truck hit them. "I get a call — 'Your mom and your son got hit,'" Molina said. Karla's mom survived, but Emmanuel did not. The driver says he never saw them. "I ran barefooted, saw my son under the guy's truck and I hold my son. I knew he was gone," Karla said. Pedestrian deaths have surged 78% in the past 15 years, according to the Department of Transportation. That's in part due to the rising size and weight of vehicles like SUVs and trucks, which create large blind zones directly in front of them and require longer braking distances. Over the past three decades, the average passenger vehicle has gotten 1,000 pounds heavier and eight inches taller, according to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "As pedestrians, we need to be aware that these vehicles are out there," said Jennifer Stockburger, who runs the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center. Demonstrations conducted at the test facility highlight the danger of blind spots in front of the hood. Every vehicle has one, but it's much bigger in larger vehicles. That can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians — especially small children — right in front of them. It also takes longer for heavier vehicles to come to a complete stop after hitting the brakes. SUVs and pickup trucks account for three-quarters of vehicle sales in the U.S., according to Edmunds. The popularity of large vehicles is not likely to change, but automakers have started repositioning front cameras lower, which may help drivers, in some cases, see pedestrians. It is a safety upgrade that is too late for the Molinas. "He gave us a pain in our family, a major pain that we will never forget," Karla said. The family is hoping changes to technology and awareness can prevent anyone else from feeling their pain. 17 bodies found in abandoned house in Mexico
Published on: Wednesday, May 28, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 28, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Five of the victims -- four men and one woman --- have been identified as missing persons, according to prosecutors. - (X/@Karla_veron1) MEXICO CITY: Missing persons investigators found 17 bodies in an abandoned house in a central Mexican region plagued by criminal violence, the state prosecutor's office said. Ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs were used to locate the bodies last week in Irapuato in Guanajuato state, according to a statement released late Monday. Knives, machetes, pickaxes, and shovels were also found. Five of the victims -- four men and one woman --- have been identified as missing persons, according to prosecutors. 'Their families are being informed,' a Guanajuato state official, Jorge Jimenez, told reporters. Guanajuato is a thriving industrial hub and home to several popular tourist destinations, but it is also Mexico's deadliest state due to gang turf wars, according to official homicide statistics. Advertisement Criminal violence, most of it linked to drug trafficking, has claimed around 480,000 lives in Mexico since 2006 and left more than 120,000 people missing. Civil society groups formed by relatives who denounce government inaction risk their own lives searching for remains in unmarked graves, often in areas where cartel gunmen are active. Much of the violence in Guanajuato is linked to conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the most powerful in the Latin American nation. Guanajuato recorded more than 3,000 murders last year, the most of any Mexican state, according to official figures. That was equivalent to just over 10 percent of the nationwide total. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
