Bengaluru police crack woman's murder, arrest relative and friend
The Bengaluru police Thursday claimed to have solved the murder case of a 50-year-old woman, and arrested her relative and his friend in connection with the crime earlier this week. According to the Cottonpet police, the suspects have been identified as Purandar, 42, a relative of the victim, and his friend Shivappa, 35, both from Karnataka's Bidar district. They worked as electricians at a private pharmaceutical company in Bidar. The police said the men allegedly killed Latha, and robbed her house after losing money in a scam. 'Initial investigation suggests they lost money in a rice-pulling scam and were in desperate need of funds,' a senior police officer said. On May 26, the two men arrived at Latha's residence on P S Lane, Cottonpet. As Purandar had visited occasionally, she welcomed them and served them breakfast. Investigators believe the men strangled Latha, as no weapons were found at the scene, suggesting the murder may not have been pre-planned. After committing the crime, the suspects fled with approximately 100 gram of gold and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash. The police said the men had arrived in Bengaluru in the morning by a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus from Bidar, and went directly to Latha's home. Latha's husband, Prakash S Mehtre (55), who owns an apparel store in Upparpet, discovered her body near the kitchen around 2 pm. The couple, originally from Bidar, had lived in Bengaluru for over 10 years. They have two children — a daughter employed in the private sector, and a son in high school.

Seven gang-rape accused in Karnataka welcomed with music, victory parade after bail. Watch
A motorcade of bikes and cars, blaring music and cheers, rolled through the streets of Akki Alur in Karnataka's Haveri district this week, not for a wedding or festival, but to welcome back seven men accused in a brutal gang-rape case. The accused, recently released on bail, were seen waving and flashing victory signs as supporters celebrated their return with pomp. The viral video of this procession has triggered widespread condemnation and outrage. (Also Read: Nine-month-old tests positive for Covid-19 in Bengaluru) The case traces back to January 8, 2024, when a 26-year-old woman was allegedly abducted from a hotel in Hanagal, where she had checked in with her long-term partner, a 40-year-old Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver, NDTV reported. According to the report, the two, reportedly in an interfaith relationship, were confronted by a group of men who stormed their room. The woman was forcibly taken to a nearby forested area and allegedly gang-raped. Initially treated as a case of moral policing, given the interfaith nature of the couple's relationship the Hanagal police registered an FIR only after the woman gave a detailed statement to a magistrate on January 11. Following her testimony, gang-rape charges were added. A total of 19 people were arrested, including seven identified as the main accused. The Haveri Sessions Court has now granted bail to those seven primary suspects: Aftab Chandanakatti, Madar Saab Mandakki, Samiwulla Lalanavar, Mohammad Sadiq Agasimani, Shoib Mulla, Tausip Choti, and Riyaz Savikeri. All had been in judicial custody for over a year. Twelve others, allegedly involved in assaulting the survivor or aiding the attackers, had been granted bail nearly ten months ago. Crucially, during the judicial process, the survivor reportedly struggled to conclusively identify the accused in court, weakening the prosecution's argument. Bowled over by scam: Karnataka cricketer cheated out of Rs 24 lakh in fake IPL deal
A 19-year-old state-level cricketer in Karnataka was defrauded out of Rs 24 lakh by cyber fraudsters who falsely promised him a spot on the Rajasthan Royals Indian Premier League team, police said on Thursday. Rakesh Yadure from Chinchani village in Belagavi district's Chikkodi taluk impressed selectors during a tournament in Hyderabad in May 2024, raising his hopes of a professional cricketing breakthrough. According to the police, in December 2024, Yadure received an Instagram message claiming he had been selected to play for Rajasthan Royals. The sender requested him to fill out a form and pay a Rs 2,000 registration fee. Yadure made repeated payments totalling Rs 23.53 lakh between December 22, 2024, and April 19, 2025. The scammers promised him match payments ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 8 lakh to keep him engaged. Despite assurances, Yadure never received a kit bag, jersey, or flight tickets. When the fraudsters demanded an additional Rs 3 lakh and failed to deliver anything, he realised he had been conned. The scammers eventually blocked him on all communication platforms. Some messages still came from one mobile phone number, but contact mostly ceased. Yadure then filed a complaint with the Belagavi CEN police, which launched an investigation. Bhimashankar Guled, Superintendent of Police, Belagavi, said Yadure's father, a security guard with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, had raised the Rs 24 lakh despite facing significant financial hardship. 'The fraudsters withdrew the money immediately. The accounts are empty. Initial leads suggest the culprits are based in Rajasthan. We're deploying our cyber team there,' he said. Yadure hoped the police would recover his money. 'I don't want anyone to go through what I underwent,' the dejected cricketer told reporters.
