When apathy shrouds pain
Lucknow: Play 'Kafan' based on story by the same name written by Munshi Premchand was staged on last day of drama festival, Premchand Rangotsav. Organised by Kashish Arts and Welfare Society and culture department, New Delhi, the play was held at the International Buddhist Research Centre on Wednesday. The plot revolves around a groaning pregnant woman, wife of Madhav and daughter-in-law of Gheesu. The woman weeps in distress of labour pain in a hut at night, while Gheesu urges her to keep quiet. Madhav and Gheesu ignore the woman's pain and keep eating roasted potatoes, stolen by Madhav. The woman dies struggling with pain. The duo collects money from villagers for her funeral, but instead of performing her last rites with the money, they buy liquor. Characters in the play were played by Sheelu Malik, Vipin Kumar, and Ram Naresh Maurya.

Betrayal undone by payback
Lucknow: A tale of greed over familial bond unfolded in the play 'Boodhi Kaki', based on Munshi Premchand's short story by the same name, staged on second day of 'Premchand Rangotsav'drama fest, organised by Kashish Arts and Welfare Society and culture department, at the International Buddhist Research Centre on Tuesday. The short story was adapted for the play and directed by Ratna Agarwal. The play focuses on plight of a rich, elderly woman betrayed by her nephew. Though wealthy, her husband and children died an untimely death. She is supported by her nephew Buddhiram, a greedy man. Buddhiram and his wife Rupa sell all of the woman's assets to a woman officer. In the end, the officer turns out to be a girl whom the old woman had taught in childhood, and she returns her land, teaching a lesson to Buddhiram and Rupa. The characters in the play were portrayed by Ratna Agarwal and Disha Dhameja.
