Another hot one before Central Florida gets a little relief

Get ready for another hot day across Central Florida. Afternoon highs on Wednesday will climb into the mid-90s. Meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said we'll be just shy of record heat. Expect breezy conditions at times, with wind gusts near 20 mph out of the WSW. On Thursday, a weakening front will move into the Channel 9 viewing area. Crimi said it will bring us a break from the heat. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s and low 90s with mostly cloudy skies and isolated showers and storms possible. The relief, however, will be short-lived, as temperatures will return to the low and mid-90s on Friday and into the weekend. Looking ahead to Memorial Day — early indications are that the wet season, with the start of daily afternoon storms, could begin around the holiday, Crimi said.

A Weather Alert Day is set for Monday

A Weather Alert Day is planned for Monday as a combo of heavy and possibly severe storms and heavy rain are in the forecast. A storm system over the northern Gulf coast is fueling things along with our seabreezes, though the cooler day we had for Mother's Day and Monday will hopefully work to reduce our overall severe threat. Channel 9's Kassandra Crimi will keep track of morning rain and scattered afternoon storms for Monday. Expect a possible 2-5″ of rain, and we'll monitor for any short-term flooding. After this system moves by, we're looking at the hottest weather possibly of the entire year with highs well into the mid and maybe upper 90s later next week. ‘Weather Alert Day' in effect for Friday

The Severe Weather Center 9 team has declared a 'Weather Alert Day' for Friday, May 9. It will be in effect for the afternoon and evening hours. Meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said a 'Level 2″ classification will be in place Friday for about half of Central Florida, with the threat for scattered, strong-to-severe thunderstorms across parts of the Channel 9 viewing area. Showers and storms will develop in the afternoon hours and intensify further in the late afternoon and early evening, likely from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The highest chance for severe storms will be along the Interstate 4 corridor and communities to the east. The greatest threats with this system will be gusty winds, hail, lightning, and heavy rainfall. As of now, Crimi said Saturday is sitting at a Level 1 for severe weather and will bring the chance for isolated severe thunderstorms. Hot & muggy Tuesday with late-day storms possible in Central Florida

Plan for a hot and muggy Tuesday in Central Florida. Afternoon highs will climb into the low 90s for many in the Channel 9 viewing area. Hot and muggy conditions could lead to late-day rain in Central Florida. Meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said late-day showers and storms will be possible as well. Areas along I-4 and to the S-SE will see the best chance for the rain on Tuesday. Crimi said over the next few afternoons, leading up to and through the weekend, rain chances will increase. Expect daily afternoon showers and storms to be on repeat. Hot and muggy conditions could lead to late-day rain in Central Florida. Locally heavy pockets of rain will be possible and by early next week, many communities will have picked up 4 to 8 inches of much-needed rainfall. Extreme or severe drought levels parch much of Central Florida

The risk of wildfires continues throughout Central Florida. As of Friday morning, there were two active wildfires in the region. The largest, 'Cowpen 2' in Flagler County, had burned 250 acres and was 90% contained at last report. The 'Palm Cay' fire, a smaller blaze in Marion County, measured about a half-acre in size and was also about 90% contained. The lack of rain has significantly contributed to dry conditions, with not much relief in sight. Central Florida is now experiencing its worst drought in eight years, meteorologist Kassandra Crimi said. The newest drought monitor upgraded several counties — including parts of Lake, Sumter, Marion, Volusia, and all of Seminole — to 'extreme' or 'severe' drought levels. Brevard County is also drought-impacted with many brush fires popping up throughout the county this week. All were contained as of Friday morning. Area law enforcement agencies continue to be on high alert as burn bans remain throughout most of Central Florida. Brevard, Seminole, Orange, Volusia and Lake counties have issued the ban. Meantime, on Wednesday, a woman was arrested in east Orange County for allegedly setting fires in a wooded area off Oberry Hoover Road. According to an arrest report, Amanda Clark, 34, set multiple fires near a transient camp. Clark, who faces a charge related to the illegal burning of land, was booked into the Orange County Jail on a $2,500 bond. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps.
