Tyler water line extension gets $2.1 million contract approval

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – In order to improve water pressure in the City of Tyler, a 12-inch water line extension will be built in North Tyler that will close a critical gap in the city's water system. Pine Tree ISD students win Longview environmental art contest The Tyler City Council approved a $2.1 million construction contract with A.E. Shull to build the extension from Highway 271 to FM 14 and North Broadway Avenue. The water line currently ends south of Gentry Parkway, but the extension would expand the line north past Loop 323 and allow it to connect with an existing 16-inch water line on FM 14. 'This is about building a stronger, more connected water network for Tyler residents,' Utilities Director Kate Dietz said, 'By looping these lines, we can provide more reliable service and better water quality.' The project is outlined in TWU's Water Distribution System Master Plan, which focuses on projects keeping the distribution system up to date while improving day-to-day service for the community. The project is expected to begin this summer and will be completed within eight months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Tyler Water Utilities to begin testing water for taste, odor study

TYLER, Texas (KETK) — Tyler Water Utilities will test different methods that will help remove a compound in water that makes it have a distinct taste and smell. Geosmin is a problematic taste and odor compound found in water sources. TWU has plans to filter the water and will have several methods for removing the geosmin using an enclosure that provides house filter columns. Tyler Water Utilities upgrading Lake Palestine water treatment plant TWU's Taste and Odor Study is in the second phase of testing. This phase includes executing the testing plan, analyzing test results and developing recommendations for removing taste and odor compounds. It will also help find potential improvements to the overall water treatment process. Lake Tyler, Lake Tyler East and Lake Palestine provide the city its drinking water. TWU has two water treatment plants, the Golden Road Water Treatment Plant and the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Lake Palestine Water plant gets its water from Lake Palestine and has high levels of geosmin which is caused by the age of the lake and the natural organic matter found in its' body. Ninety five percent of the geosmin can be removed by the Lake Palestine Water Treatment Plant. Geosmin is treated year round even though the water is safe to drink and meets federal and state water quality standards. Courtesy of City of Tyler 'We're working to identify better treatment solutions now for future plant expansions and ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality water for Tyler residents,' Utilities Director Kate Dietz said. Testing is set to be completed and documented into a final report by Spring 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
