Alberta's unemployment largely unchanged in May, Red Deer sees notable drop

Alberta's unemployment rate was little changed in May, while Red Deer saw a massive decline.
Statistics Canada released its May 2025 Labour Force Survey on Friday, which showed Alberta's jobless rate sitting at 7.4 per cent, up slightly from 7.1 per cent in April.
Looking at Alberta cities, Calgary's unemployment rate increased to 7.8 per cent last month, compared to 7.4 per cent the month prior.
'Calgary continues to show relative resilience,' said Kate Koplovich, director of strategy at Calgary Economic Development. 'While our unemployment rate has edged up, it remains below last year's level and we continue to lead the country with the highest labour force participation rate.'
Edmonton's unemployment rate was unchanged in May, sitting at 7.3 per cent.
In Red Deer, unemployment plummeted two percentage points to 6.2 per cent from 8.2 per cent the month before.
Lethbridge's jobless rate was 5.2 per cent in May, dipping slightly from 5.4 per cent in April.
The national unemployment rate was 7.0 per cent in May.
