HPD provides data for weekend DUI checkpoint operation honoring Kathrynn Lively

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville Police Department provided News 19 with data points associated with the DUI checkpoint operation over the weekend. News 19 reached out to HPD to learn about specific numbers associated with the weekend DUI checkpoints in memory of Kathrynn Lively, who was killed in 2022 when an impaired driver collided head-on with her motorcycle. HPD told us that on Friday, they arrested a total of seven people, 54 citations were issued and 40 warnings were written. The department said these happened in the time frame of 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. For the weekend as a whole, May 2-4, 12 people were arrested for driving under the influence, 137 citations were issued and 72 warnings were written. HPD said when compared to the average numbers of DUI arrests, citations and warnings on a non-checkpoint operation weekend, the numbers from this weekend were not significantly higher. 'Keep in mind that DUI enforcement in the City of Huntsville is influenced by various factors, some of which are entertainment events, the timing of holidays, and weather conditions,' HPD said. The department said it hopes the dedication program to Lively will put a name and a face to an initiative, and have drivers think twice before getting behind the wheel drunk. 'We're honoring Kathrynn's memory by sharing her story and shedding light on the devastating consequences of impaired driving,' Sgt. Antonio Shorter of HPD's DUI Task Force said. 'This initiative also launches our new Safety Checkpoint Dedication Program, which gives families who've lost loved ones a platform to raise awareness and help inspire real change in our community.' Officers were out at several named and unnamed checkpoint locations, including Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive, Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike, Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane, Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road and more. HPD announces DUI checkpoints in memory of 21-year-old killed in 2022

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Huntsville Police Department announced some traffic safety DUI checkpoints throughout the weekend of May 2-4. HPD said the DUI Task Force will be conducting safety checkpoints this weekend as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce impaired driving and enhance roadway safety. The department said this series of checkpoints will be the department's first dedicated safety checkpoints held in memory of Kathrynn Lively, who was killed in 2022 when an impaired driver collided head-on with her motorcycle. 'We're honoring Kathrynn's memory by sharing her story and shedding light on the devastating consequences of impaired driving,' Sgt. Antonio Shorter of HPD's DUI Task Force said. 'This initiative also launches our new Safety Checkpoint Dedication Program, which gives families who've lost loved ones a platform to raise awareness and help inspire real change in our community.' If you are stopped at a traffic safety checkpoint, be prepared to present your driver's license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration to officers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
