When is the summer solstice 2025? What to know about the longest day of the year
With the cool temperatures and rain in the region over Memorial Day weekend, it seems like summer weather will never reach Connecticut. But it's much closer than it seems, with the summer season right around the corner, which kicks off with the summer solstice. The summer solstice is when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky for the year, and marks the beginning of summer. It is the longest day of the year, with the most daylight. "The summer solstice occurs at the moment the earth's tilt toward the sun is at a maximum," according to the National Weather Service website. "Therefore, on the day of the summer solstice, the sun appears at its highest elevation with a noontime position that changes very little for several days before and after the summer solstice." It will occur this year on June 20, 2025. It begins with the summer solstice on June 20. The summer solstice is not on the same day every year. "The solstices also do not land on the same calendar day every year because the astronomical year is 365.25 days long," according to the website. "As such, the summer solstice for the Northern Hemisphere — also known as the June solstice — currently shifts between June 20, 21 and 22." Conversely, the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere happens on Dec. 21 or 22 each year. The National Weather Service is predicting another hot summer in the northeast this year. The NWS three-month outlook, issued April 17, shows that temperatures in New England are likely to be 50-60% above normal in May, June and July of 2025. Precipitation in the Northeast is also expected to be slightly above normal by about 35-40%. The Farmer's Almanac also predicted above average temperatures in the Northeast this summer. In New England, "broiling" heat is in the forecast. "Heat will be in full force by July, with much of the nation sweltering with above- to high-above average temperatures," the forecast says. However, it predicts 'average precipitation' for the region. Katie Landeck contributed to this report. This article originally appeared on The Providence Journal: When is the summer solstice 2025? Forever 21 set to close all stores, including 6 in Connecticut. Here's where
Forever 21 may soon be gone from Connecticut. The fast fashion chain is set to close locations, including six in Connecticut, after filing for bankruptcy. Forever 21's operator F21 OpCo announced the voluntary Chapter 11 filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Sunday, marking the company's second time filing for bankruptcy in six years. For now, Forever 21's website and stores in the United States will remain open as the retailer begins to wind down business in the U.S. Unless a last-minute buyer is found during the bankruptcy process, the clothing chain will be faced with closing all 300+ of its remaining stores in the country. According to the bankruptcy filings from F21 OpCo, the company has financially struggled in recent years due to competition with foreign fast fashion companies, rising prices and economic challenges for consumers. Store closures have been popping up across the country in recent months, and just last month, the chain closed its headquarters and laid off over 300 employees. "While we have evaluated all options to best position the Company for the future, we have been unable to find a sustainable path forward," said F21 OpCo chief financial officer Brad Sell in a news release. "We are also grateful for the many years of support from our partners and our loyal customers, who have allowed us to serve as a fashion industry leader and go-to retailer for generations.' Were any RI federal buildings on the proposed closure list? What we know.
Federally-owned buildings across Rhode Island, including the IRS's service center in downtown, have been spared from an initial list of 443 buildings that may be closed and sold. The closest buildings initially listed were on the South Coast: Fall River's Social Security Administration building at 400 N. Main St. New Bedford's U.S. Custom House, the historic Greek Revival building at 37 N. Second St. In a statement, the General Services Administration wrote that the buildings have become "functionally obsolete and unsuitable for use by our federal workforce." Since that initial list was posted, it has been taken down. The listing of 443 properties was saved to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. See the original list of "non-core" properties set to be disposed of here. While some IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are on the 443-property list to be shuttered, "The Federal Center," a hulking four-story brick building in Downtown Providence, is not on the list. That federal building houses one of Rhode Island's two IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers. The building was framed as key to bringing people to the Westminster Pedestrian Mall before it was dismantled. The Providence Taxpayer Assistance Center is downtown at 380 Westminster St., in "The Federal Center," a hulking four-story brick building. Normally it is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Warwick's Taxpayer Assistance Center is at 40 Quaker Lane. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and on weekends. Among the most noteable buildings on that initial list closure were: Headquarters of the Department of Justice Headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigations Old Post Office, formerly the Trump International Hotel The administration is often tasked with getting rid of surplus or excess government property and land. In Rhode Island, and New England, that often means offloading lighthouses under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Some recent lighthouses that have been offloaded, or are in the process, are: Beavertail Lighthouse Prudence Island lighthouse Watch Hill Lighthouse Warwick Neck Lighthouse Read about all the 21 lighthouses in Rhode Island, many privately owned, in this primer by Katie Landeck.
