Canady tosses 6-hitter as Texas Tech beats Texas 4-3 to set up decisive Game 3 at WCWS
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — NiJaree Canady scattered six hits and pitched her way out of a seventh-inning jam, and Texas Tech forced a decisive third game in the Women's College World Series with a 4-3 victory over Texas on Thursday night. The Game 3 showdown on Friday matches two teams looking for their first national title. Canady, who allowed a go-ahead, two-run single for Texas while trying to walk a member of the Longhorns in the sixth inning of an eventual xxx-xx loss, again went the distance for the Red Raiders. She has pitched every inning in the super regionals and World Series and carried a 4-1 lead to the seventh. But Texas' Katie Stewart reached on an error by the shortstop and Canady hit Victoria Hunter to put runners on first and second with no outs. Leighann Goode doubled to left center, scoring Stewart and moving Hunter to third. Pinch-hitter Katie Cimusz lined out to left field and Hunter scored to cut the deficit to 4-3. But Canady got Ashton Mahoney to ground out and struck out Kayden Henry to end the game. ___ AP sports:

Stewart homer, Morgan and Teagan Kavan pitching send Texas past Tennessee for spot in WCWS finals
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Katie Stewart hit a home run, Mac Morgan and Teagan Kavan combined on a 3-hitter, and Texas defeated Tennessee 2-0 on Monday to reach the Women's College World Series championship series for the third time in four years. Kavan, who threw a complete game with eight strikeouts in Saturday's 4-2 win over Oklahoma, came on in relief of Morgan in the fifth inning and didn't allow a hit the rest of the way. She struck out the Volunteers' Emma Clarke to end the game. Texas (54-11) will play either Oklahoma or Texas Tech in the best-of-three series, which starts Wednesday. Those teams square off in Monday night's other semifinal. Karlyn Pickens, a National Fastpitch Coaches Association first-team All-American, allowed just one earned run on five hits and struck out nine for Tennessee (47-17). Texas loaded the bases against Pickens in the third with one out but couldn't score. Reese Atwood struck out swinging and Joley Mitchell popped out to the catcher to end the inning. Things got heated in the top of the fourth when Tennessee hitting coach Craig Snider, the former Texas Tech head coach, appeared to have words with the Texas dugout and was ejected. Stewart homered off Pickens to start the fourth, a high drive to left that drifted beyond the outstretched glove of Alannah Leach. Pickens recovered quickly, striking out the next three batters she faced. Morgan got the win, striking out four and walking one. The Longhorns added an insurance run the sixth on a throwing error by Vols third baseman Taylor Pannell. ___ AP sports:

Joley Mitchell homers twice, No. 6 Texas beats No. 3 Florida in WCWS opener
Joley Mitchell hit a pair of solo home runs and Teagan Kavan threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout as sixth-seeded Texas beat third-seeded Florida 3-0 in the opening round of the Women's College World Series on Thursday in Oklahoma City. Texas will take on the winner of Thursday's Oklahoma-Tennessee matchup on Saturday. Florida will play the Oklahoma-Tennessee loser in an elimination game on Friday. Mitchell got the scoring started with a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning off Keagan Rothrock, driving a 2-2 offering out to left. Mitchell then blasted Rothrock's 2-1 pitch out to right-center to kick off the sixth, with Gators' center fielder Kendra Falby just missing a home-run-saving catch. It was Mitchell's first multi-home run game of the season and the 15th and 16th of the season for the graduate student. The next batter, Katie Stewart, chased Rothrock (16-7) with a line-drive homer to right to make it 3-0. Florida didn't have a hit until Korbe Otis' infield single with two outs in the fourth. Taylor Shumaker beat out a slow roller to third with one out in the sixth for the second hit. Kavan (25-5) created plenty of soft contact, with just one strikeout and two walks. --Field Level Media

Clemson has one more opportunity to shock everyone in the Super Regional against Texas
Clemson has one more opportunity to shock everyone in the Super Regional against Texas The stage is set for a winner-take-all battle in Austin. After falling 7-5 in extra innings on Friday night, No. 11 seed Clemson softball finds itself in a familiar position: one win away from reaching the Women's College World Series for the first time in program history. But after letting a golden opportunity slip in Game 2 of the NCAA Super Regional against No. 6 Texas, the Tigers will need to regroup quickly ahead of Saturday's decisive Game 3. Clemson (48-13) and Texas (50-11) are now even at one win apiece in the best-of-three series. The final game — with a trip to Oklahoma City on the line — is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Clemson will serve as the designated visiting team. Friday's game had all the makings of a postseason classic. The Tigers, looking to build on Thursday's historic 7-4 win in Game 1, rallied twice but ultimately came up just short in the 10th inning. Texas, playing as the visiting team for Game 2, broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th with a two-run frame. Katie Stewart led off the inning with a single, and a fielding error put two runners on. A sacrifice bunt moved them over, and the Longhorns took advantage with a sac fly from Kaydee Bennett and an RBI single by Ashton Maloney. Clemson threatened in the bottom half. With two outs, Kylee Johnson drew a walk, and Jamison Brockenbrough singled to bring the tying run to first base. But Texas reliever Teagan Kavan got Alex Brown to ground into a fielder's choice, ending the game and forcing a Game 3. The Tigers had multiple chances earlier to take control. Freshman Macey Cintron tied the game 5-5 in the fifth with a solo home run to center, her 15th blast of the year. Clemson also had a chance to walk it off in the eighth when Marian Collins and Taylor Pipkins opened the inning with back-to-back singles, putting the winning run on third with no outs. But Kavan, who delivered 5.2 scoreless innings of relief, wiggled out of the jam. Julia Knowler led Clemson at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Maddie Moore drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the third. Brockenbrough, Collins, and Aby Vieira each added two hits for the Tigers. In the circle, Reese Basinger started and allowed three earned runs over four innings. Brooke McCubbin pitched the final six, giving up four runs — only one of them earned — while striking out three. Clemson's defense committed a costly error in the 10th, and it came back to haunt them. Now, everything comes down to Saturday night. For the second year in a row, Clemson is trying to reach a milestone that's eluded them since the program's founding in 2020: a spot in Oklahoma City. After winning Game 1 on Thursday behind a late offensive surge and a game-changing double play from Brockenbrough, the Tigers proved they can hang with one of the nation's top teams. But beating Texas twice in Austin won't come easy. With one final chance to make program history, the Tigers will need to summon their best performance of the season. One game. One opportunity. One win from the Women's College World Series. Contact us @Clemson_Wire on X, and like our page on Facebook for ongoing coverage of Clemson Tigers news and notes, plus opinions.
