Broadneck sticks with tradition, wins fifth straight girls' lacrosse title

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — As the Broadneck girls' lacrosse team walked off the field after Wednesday's Maryland Class 4A final, the emotions started to emerge. The Bruins hugged and cried as they celebrated a fifth consecutive state title. As the team lined up to accept its first-place medals, Coach Katy Kelley broke down herself. The longtime coach usually maintains a strong poker face after big wins, but Thursday's victory was different. After the game, Kelley announced that she would be stepping down. The 8-6 win over Urbana Wednesday night at Stevenson University would be her final game as head coach of the Bruins.

The Cougars scored four quick goals to open the fourth quarter, cutting the Bruins' lead to four with 10 minutes to play in a Maryland Class 4A semifinal at Glen Burnie High. Broadneck Coach Katy Kelley quickly called a timeout. Sometimes a raised voice makes all the difference.
