Grab a Table! Savannah's Restaurant Week helps boost business after storm
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Calling all food lovers! Restaurant week is underway. After last week's historic snowstorm, the event has now been extended! This gives businesses an extra week to bounce back.
When it comes to dining out, it is expected everyone loves a good deal as much as anyone else. If you've missed the start of restaurant week – you're in luck! Many restaurants could not open when the event originally started because of the snowstorm. Restaurants now have the option to offer their deals for a total of 18 days.
A historical 3 inches of snow left Savannah restaurants scrambling earlier this week, so the timing could not be better for the return of Restaurant Week. The original plan for the event was to be 11 days starting January 23rd and running through February 2nd.
'We are very proud of the fact that this year is probably Savannah's largest Restaurant Week in about 10 years. Ten to twelve years. We were up to 38 restaurants, three had to drop out because of some renovations they were having done that wasn't finished on time,' said Blanco, who is the organizer behind Restaurant Week. Blanco is also the co-founder of Eat It & Like It, a food blog and EMMY nominated television show that was created to explore the under-appreciated diversity of Southern Cuisine.
This year a total of 34 restaurants are participating in Restaurant Week, an increase of 7 from last year. Blanco shares his goal for next year is to exceed 40 participants.
'It amazes me when locals who have been here for years have never been to these participating restaurants. This is as much for locals as visitors. Get acquainted with your city! We know it gets busy around St. Patrick's Day. Right now, it is quiet down here, you can park wherever you want so why not come now?' Said Blanco.
With more than 30 participating spots- from cozy pubs like Churchill's to fine dining at Ruth Chris' Steakhouse, this gives food lovers a chance to enjoy three-course meals for set prices ranging from $30 to $65.
Also – new this year – certain hotels will offer special room rates that include dinner at their restaurants. This includes the Thompson Hotel, Alida Hotel, and Brice Hotel.
The 11-day event (18-days for certain restaurants) offers a chance to savor the best of Savannah's dining scene while helping local businesses get back on their feet during the off-season for tourism.
Kayak Cafe is participating in its first Restaurant Week.
'We definitely depend on the support of our customers, and our locals. They are the heart of our business, and I think it is like you are supporting a local entrepreneur. We are a family-owned business. I know this is the same thing with a lot of businesses here in Savannah,' said Monique Silen, the Owner of Kayak Cafe.
With the extension, restaurants have the option to extend their deals until February 9th.
Silen and her husband opened up their first cafe almost two decades ago and expanded a second Kayak Cafe 11 years ago to midtown. This is their first year participating so far, and while business started slow because of the storm, Silen says she can tell it's picking up.
'We are hoping to get more traffic and exposure. Besides the storm, the beginning of the year tends to be a little slow, so this is great incentive to bring in people,' said Silen.
Kayak Cafe was one of the participating restaurants that couldn't open on Restaurant Week's opening day. Their parking lot was frozen over, and management decided it wasn't safe for employees to come in.
'You get a restaurant that couldn't open (due to the storm) for four to five days, you have servers where that is their primary source of income. And if they are out of work for a week that is money they lose. It has been hard for everybody, so we extended restaurant week to help support everyone,' said Blanco.
On Monday, restaurants were given the option to extend their deals to February 9th. So far, 18 participants have extended their deals.
