Del Taco expands in Ohio with new Columbus-area location
POWELL, Ohio (WCMH) — Del Taco has opened a new Columbus-area restaurant inside a former White Castle as part of plans to grow the Mexican chain's Ohio footprint.
The chain is now welcoming customers at 8787 Owenfield Drive between Powell and Lewis Center, inside a former White Castle that closed in June 2023. Del Taco announced the transformation last fall with a 'coming soon' banner while the building was repainted to match the brand's grey, green and white aesthetic.

'We're thrilled to be part of the Powell community,' said Kayla Hutton, local operating partner. 'From our craveable tacos to late-night bites and everything in between, this location is all about serving up bold flavors with fresh ingredients. With our Fresh Flex Design and popular seasonal seafood specials, we're ready to become Powell's new go-to spot for a great meal, any time of day.'
One of the nation's largest Mexican chains, Del Taco is launching the new central Ohio eatery after closing the U.S. 23 South location in Circleville in December 2023. That location, which opened in March 2021, became the new restaurant last fall for Huey Magoo's, a southern chain boasted as the 'filet mignon of chicken.'
Still, Del Taco said the Powell storefront continues the chain's statewide expansion. Brandi Joseph, another Ohio franchisee operating partner, said at the time of the Circleville location's opening that the brand is 'gearing up to grow the Del Taco footprint in Ohio over the next few years.'
Organization offering 'bounty' for removal of invasive trees in central Ohio
Del Taco also operates a restaurant in Whitehall and opened a Marion location in 2023. Founded in 1964, the chain operates nearly 600 restaurants across 15 states. Menu items include burritos, tacos, burgers, and crinkle-cut fries.
The Powell store includes a drive-thru and operates daily from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m.
