Dad Who Held Gun to Ex's Head and Forced Her to 'Choose Between' Herself and Son Learns Fate

Kaylah Farmer's mother and two sisters provided an emotional message to her killer in court last week, telling the ex-husband who stalked and shot her at an Indiana gas station that he will be forever 'erased' from their lives and 'forgotten.'Joshua Farmer was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the June 2023 murder, according to local WTHR. Farmer, 32, pleaded guilty to the murder in March, according to The Current. Local Fox 59 had reported that Hamilton County prosecutors originally sought the death sentence against Farmer for killing the mother of three. "No sentence will ever bring her back or erase the pain we live with every single day,' Tracey Walser, the mother of Kaylah Farmer, told the court last week, according to WTHR. 'But a just sentence can help us begin to heal. It can allow us to finally take a step forward knowing that the person responsible has been held accountable." Kaylah's sister Kassie Adkins testified that her sister's 'children will live with the reality that their father killed their mother,' according to the outlet. 'That will be the defining truth of their lives,' Adkins said. 'Their story will forever start with tragedy that they did not choose and didn't deserve." Alisha Landis, Kaylah's other sister, addressed Farmer directly, according to WTHR."This is the last time you will be acknowledged by me or by anyone in our family,' Landis said. 'Once this hearing is over, you will be erased from our lives. You have no children. You have no legacy. The boys you once knew do not speak your name and they never will. I will spend the rest of my life making sure you are forgotten. Gone. Bye bye. You will have no power here, not over me, not over Kaylah's children." A month prior to the June 2023 killing, prosecutors said Farmer punched and choked his ex-wife in front of their children. During the incident, Farmer held a gun to his ex-wife's head and demanded she 'choose between herself' and her child, WTHR previously reported, citing court documents. The child also told police that their mother attempted to call 911 but their father had 'taken her phone from her.' One month later, Farmer followed his ex-wife to a local gas station and shot her 15 times through her car window while she waited at a gas pump. His sentencing last week reflected charges from both incidents, according to WTHR. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Farmer did not provide a statement in court last week with his ex-wife's family and friends sitting in the courtroom, according to the outlet. "I don't have anything to say,' he said. Afternoon Briefing: Judge orders boy, 15, held in killing of 16-year-old girl

Good afternoon, Chicago. A Cook County judge has ordered a 15-year-old boy held pending trial in the killing of a 16-year-old girl found beaten to death in East Garfield Park earlier this month. The boy, whose name was not released, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Kaylah Love, who was found dead March 17 in a park in the 3000 block of West Van Buren Street. An autopsy performed by the Cook County medical examiner's office found Kaylah died of multiple injuries due to an assault, and her death was ruled a homicide. Here's what else is happening today. Suspect charged in murder of 16-year-old girl at park on Chicago's West Side

CHICAGO – A teenage boy is under arrest in connection with the brutal killing of a 16-year-old girl at a park on Chicago's West Side last week. According to police sources, the 15-year-old boy, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, was taken into custody Sunday and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Sources with knowledge of the case credited community cooperation as playing a crucial role in the arrest. Over the weekend, two vigils were held for Kaylah Love, who is remembered as a kind person, a talented chef, and a bright student who had a promising future ahead of her. 'Kaylah, she did not deserve this. My little cousin, she did not deserve this,' Jasmine Reynolds said. 'At 16 years old, there's no way she should be gone. There's no way another mother should have to bury her child. That's not how it's supposed to go.' 'She was a great kid': Vigils held to honor teen found slain in West Side park Kaylah's body was found at Horan Park in the 3000 block of West Van Buren Street around 4:50 p.m. on March 17, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to family, on the day before her body was found, Kaylah said she was going to McDonald's to pick up food but did not return home. She was later reported missing to police by her family. Police sources told WGN-TV that the victim suffered severe head trauma and was stabbed in the face and neck close to a dozen times. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide and said she died from multiple injuries related to an assault. Sources believe the victim's body may have been in the park since the day before she was found. A woman called to report two people fighting, but officers that stopped by and checked the area reported they did not find anything. It was the same person, sources said, who called the next day to report finding the girl's body. At a vigil Sunday in Horan Park, family, friends, and the ward's alderman called for justice and accountability in Kaylah's death, including an investigation into the actions of officers that responded to the initial call on March 16. The Chicago Police Department has confirmed an internal investigation is underway into the handling of the call for a report of a fight. No further details were released. Kaylah was a sophomore at Manley Career Academy where the first of two memorials was held Sunday. Releasing black and purple balloons, her two favorite colors, family members, friends, faculty, and elected officials came together to honor her memory. 'We appreciate the community coming together, the love and support for the family. We thank everyone, but at the end of the day, the priority is getting justice for Kaylah,' Kenyatta Euring, Kaylah's cousin, said. Kaylah's family said she loved music, was considering pursuing culinary arts in college, and loved to decorate and draw. Instead of helping her prepare for her future, they're now planning her funeral. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family. As of Monday morning, it had raised just over $10,500. Late last week, Cook County Crime Stoppers shared it was offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest or indictment of the person(s) responsible in the case. Anyone with information was asked to submit an anonymous tip to tips@ or by calling CPD's hotline at 833-408-0069. The investigation remains ongoing, police said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. ‘She was on her way:' Teen found slain in park was aspiring chef, affectionate daughter

Kyana Love was on her shift as a forklift driver when a Chicago police detective arrived to see her Tuesday. It had been two days since Love's 16-year-old daughter, Kaylah, left their Garfield Park home Sunday to pick up McDonald's wearing a Rugrats jacket and carrying a skull-shaped purse with a bow. Only one day had passed since Kyana Love reported her daughter missing. The detective wanted to know if Love, 39, recognized the jacket and the purse with a person they had found dead Monday in Horan Park, also in the Garfield Park neighborhood. A woman who called 911 March 16 to report two people fighting in the park found Kaylah Love there the next day near the playground with stab wounds to the head and neck and other injuries from blunt-force trauma, according to police. Instead of her daughter in the living room blasting R&B music and Taylor Swift, Kyana Love has been coming home to a houseful of people bringing food and trying to help with memorial arrangements. Woman found dead near West Side playground died in assault: Autopsy Kaylah Love had recently declared herself the family chef, Kyana Love said. 'I told her a story that I messed up the spaghetti at a barbecue and Kaylah looked at me and she told me, 'Get out the kitchen. I got it,'' Love recalled. Kaylah had a talent for cooking, able to make spaghetti, chicken alfredo, corn and rice and packed lunches and made holiday meals, Kyana Love said. Although she was only a sophomore at Manley Career Academy, she seriously considered studying culinary arts in college. She'd recently gotten a food handlers' certificate to get restaurant experience this summer, her mom said. 'She was on her way,' Kyana Love said. 'A 16-year-old with a dream in life got taken away.' She still gave hugs 'even though she was a teenager' and had recently gotten a job in an art gallery through the program After School Matters, her mom said. She asked to decorate her entire room in black, down to the sheets on the bed, drew anime characters and loved clothes: leather jackets, collared shirts and high-tops. Kyana Love wanted her to have fun as a young person before she had to take on the adult responsibilities of paying bills and caring for a family. 'I wanted to show her what success could be,' she said. 'My baby girl can't see if I could become a screenwriter and I can't help her with her dreams, because her life has been cut short.' The family said they were hosting a memorial for Kaylah at 2 p.m. Sunday across from Manley Career Academy. Police said Saturday that no one was in custody in connection with Kaylah's death and Harrison area detectives were continuing their investigation.
