Governor meets CPNE delegation, seeks mechanism to check fake news
LAHORE: Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan said that the Pakistan People's Party is committed to upholding freedom of the press and fostering its growth. 'Responsible media plays a vital role in identifying societal issues and promoting democratic values, however, there is need to chart out a mechanism to tackle the spread of fake news on social media,' the governor said these views during the meeting with a delegation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) led by President CPNE Kazim Khan, here at the Governor House. General Secretary of PPP Central Punjab, Hassan Murtaza was also present. The governor stressed the vital importance of the media in shaping public discourse. He said the media plays a key role in the continuity of democracy and political stability in the country. He emphasized the PPP's longstanding commitment to press freedom. He advocated for stakeholders' consultations on the PECA law, highlighting the need for a balanced approach, acknowledging that fake news is relatively low in traditional media. Expressing concern about its proliferation on social media, he suggested establishing a mechanism to curb fake news, with journalists playing a proactive role in this endeavour. The governor further said that the PPP faced media trial between 2008 and 2013, yet the PPP did not support imposing any restriction on freedom of expression. On this occasion, the delegation informed the governor about their reservations on the PECA Act. The delegation stressed on stakeholders' consultation on amendments to the PECA Act. The delegation was comprised of Ayaz Khan Senior Vice President, President Free Media Committee Irshad Arif, Ghulam Nabi Chandio Secretary General, Tanveer Shaukat Deputy Secretary General, Ijaz Khan, Waqas Tariq and other officials. JI warns govt against using PECA
LAHORE: Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has emphasized the need to curb fake news but warned the government against using the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) as a cover to advance its malicious agenda. Talking to a delegation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) led by its President Kazim Khan, he stressed that freedom of expression must be safeguarded at all costs. He announced that the JI would fully support journalist community in their struggle against the PECA law. 'Jamaat-e-Islami will participate in all journalist-led activities against the PECA Act.' The CPNE delegation included Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, Senior Vice President Ayaz Khan, Deputy Secretary Tanveer Shaukat, Chairman Media Freedom Committee Irshad Arif, former Secretary General Ijazul Haq, and Punjab Joint Secretary Waqas Tariq. JI Secretary General Ameerul Azeem and Information Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Turabi were also present at the meeting. Rehman stated that while the nation is currently unified and motivated following Pakistan's recent victory against India, laws like PECA would only breed unrest and disunity. He urged the government to immediately withdraw PECA and initiate broad-based consultations to draft new legislation through national consensus. Praising the role of Pakistani media during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, he said, 'Our media displayed professionalism and responsibility, unlike the Indian media which became a global laughingstock.' Kazim Khan and other CPNE delegates remarked that prior to the conflict, campaigns were being run against Pakistani media accusing it of irresponsibility and undermining national security. However, after the war, government and military spokespersons publicly acknowledged that Pakistani media acted with remarkable responsibility. Even the DG ISPR expressed gratitude to the media for its role. The JI leader also raised the issue of timely and fair salary payments to media workers, to which Kazim Khan agreed and assured that CPNE would include this demand in its official agenda. Azma felicitates CPNE office bearers
LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has extended her heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected office bearers of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), including President Kazim Khan, Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, Senior Vice President Ayaz Khan, and Deputy Secretary General Tanveer Shaukat. In her congratulatory message, Azma Bokhari acknowledged CPNE's exemplary struggle for safeguarding the rights of print media and upholding freedom of expression. She emphasized that CPNE has always played a vital, key, and effective role in the newspaper industry. The Minister reaffirmed that the Punjab government remains fully committed to the growth, development, and stability of the print media industry and will continue to take all essential measures in this regard. She stated that despite the dominance of digital media and the internet, newspapers still hold their importance and relevance. Azma Bokhari noted that even today, news published in newspapers is considered credible, authentic, and trustworthy. She added that the standard and impact of print journalism is in no way inferior to any modern platform. The Punjab government is moving forward with a strong spirit of cooperation with the print media, aiming to promote transparency and responsibility in the dissemination of information, she added.
