Viral gold heist couple charged with RM111k jewellery theft
SHAH ALAM: A couple who went viral for posing as customers at a goldsmith's shop before fleeing with over RM111,000 worth of jewellery were brought before the magistrates' court today to face theft charges.
The accused, Abdul Hafiz Mohamed Samsudin, 25, and Nur Farwizah Mohd Yusof, 23, pleaded not guilty to a joint charge before assistant registrar Siti Mazrah Mohamad.
They are accused of stealing three 916 gold bracelets weighing 235.7g and two 916 gold rings weighing 8.38g, with a total value of some RM111,743.55.
They allegedly committed the offence at 4pm at Kedai Emas Muslim Gold in Seksyen 7 on April 26.
The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code read in conjunction with Section 34, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.
Deputy public prosecutor Salman Alfarisi Nawawi proposed bail of RM6,000 for each accused.
In mitigation, lawyer Salahuddin Salam, representing Hafiz, requested a minimal bail, saying that his client was unemployed and financially supports his family.
Meanwhile, Mohd Razlan Jalaluddin, representing Farwizah, said her family could only afford bail between RM3,000 and RM4,000.
"She is single and works as a live host on social media. Her education level is up to Form Five," he said.
The court set bail at RM3,500 for each accused and fixed June 11 for case mention.
A two-minute and 21-second closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording of the incident went viral on TikTok, showing the man and woman stealing the jewellery.
Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said a 26-year-old female sales assistant lodged a police report after discovering that the female suspect had taken several pieces of jewellery without her knowledge.
He said the theft was only discovered after the suspects had left the premises, with a subsequent review of the CCTV footage confirming the incident.
Further investigations revealed that the couple had pawned some of the jewellery and sold the rest. The stolen items were later recovered in Klang.
Iqbal added that the act was an opportunistic crime, driven by the couple's financial difficulties and desire to start a new life together.
They were arrested at 3.20pm last Friday in Bandar Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor, after a week in hiding.
