30-year-old Stockton man found dead after crashing into slough near 1-5
(This story has been updated with additional information.)
A 30-year-old Stockton man was found dead after he crashed into an area slough on Sunday.
At about 6:19 a.m., the driver was in an Infinity JX35 northbound on I-5 and south of Downing Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man traveled "across the east asphalt shoulder where it collided with a metal guardrail," CHP officers said. His vehicle continued to travel in a "northerly direction down the east dirt embankment where it entered the slough and became fully submerged."
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Keenan Hendon, a Stockton resident, on Monday night.
The Stockton Fire Department Water Rescue team found the vehicle in the middle of the slough, CHP said.
"Stockton Fire Department was able to place a hook on the vehicle and pull it closer to shore where it was determined the vehicle was unoccupied," CHP officials stated. "San Joaquin Sheriff's Office dive team responded to the scene and divers were deployed into the water as well as an underwater robotic device to search for any occupants of the vehicle."
Authorities said the slough was searched and Hendon was found dead.
At the time, it's unclear how fast the car was traveling and it's unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, CHP officers said.
