MMEA SAR operations saved 1,000 lives nationwide last year

PASIR PUTEH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) successfully rescued 1,259 individuals through 226 search and rescue (SAR) operations nationwide last year. Kelantan Maritime director Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi revealed that 64 fatalities were recorded, while 25 victims remain missing. Speaking at a press conference during the 2025 Maritime Awareness and Safety Day celebration, Erwan Shah highlighted the agency's operational efficiency. 'The statistics reflect MMEA's preparedness in emergency maritime situations,' he said. The annual event also serves as a platform to educate fishermen, tourists, and maritime operators on sea safety. 'We are intensifying awareness campaigns through community talks, social media, and safety exhibitions to reduce risks and strengthen ties with coastal communities,' he added. MMEA ensures at least one standby asset per state for rapid emergency response.

PASIR PUTEH, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted 226 search and rescue (SAR) operations throughout last year, involving 1,348 victims nationwide. Kelantan Maritime director, Captain Erwan Shah Soahdi, said out of the total, 1,259 victims were rescued, 64 were reported dead, and 25 were classified as missing. He said the statistics demonstrate the efficiency and readiness of MMEA's assets in conducting emergency maritime operations. 'This annually celebrated Maritime Awareness and Safety Day also serves as a platform to educate maritime communities, including fishermen, tourists, and ocean operators on safety measures while at sea,' he said. Erwan Shah said this during a press conference held in conjunction with the 2025 Maritime Awareness and Safety Day celebration at the Kelantan Maritime headquarters here today. He added that MMEA ensures at least one asset remains in a state of readiness in each state and maritime zone to be immediately deployed upon receiving an emergency report. 'This year, Maritime Malaysia is intensifying its sea safety awareness campaign through community talks, social media campaigns, leaflet distribution, dialogue sessions, safety exhibitions, and interviews on electronic media.
