Kelleher decision will be key to former Manchester United manager's transfer bid

Caoimhin Kelleher is in advanced talks with Brentford, who want to land the Liverpool and Ireland goalkeeper before giving the green light to their current number one to leave. According to Sky Sports, talks between Brentford and Premier League champions Liverpool are at an advanced stage. The Bees are resigned to losing their Netherlands international Mark Flekken, whose transfer to Bayer Leverkusen now hinges on a replacement being recruited. Brentford have identified Kelleher as their top choice and as soon as he signs, Flekken's €13m switch to former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag's side will be finalised. Kelleher will arrive at a cost of around €25m if a deal can be struck. His Liverpool days were all but numbered last summer when the Reds signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. However, Liverpool turned down bids from Nottingham Forest as Mamardashvili was loaned back to the La Liga side for the season, and the Irishman made 20 appearances in all competitions during the campaign. Leeds United, West Ham, Chelsea and Newcastle are among the clubs that have monitored Kelleher this past season, but Brentford appear to have won the race for the Corkman. Whether a move can be finalised ahead of Ireland's friendlies against Senegal on Friday and Luxembourg four days later remains to be seen. Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson said on Sunday that he didn't want players getting distracted by potential moves. Asked if he would allow a player to leave the camp to undergo a medical over the next week, he replied: 'I would prefer after Luxembourg, but a medical today doesn't take a long time, so it could be done here if it's something like this. 'I've had this in previous camps, you would just evaluate the situation when it comes.' Asked what he would tell any player that came to him seeking advice on a possible transfer, he replied: 'I've had some players calling and telling me that this is a possibility. I would just give it a thought before I say something. 'It's basically the same thing, it's better to be playing on a regular basis in a good club. 'Sometimes it's players that are really highly valued at their clubs. 'It's always a risk changing clubs because you need to play better than the current player in that position. So it's always a risk to change a club and I would just try to be honest. 'I've been quite consistent in saying this, so they kind of know what I would be answering.'

Caoimhín Kelleher closing in on move to Brentford from Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher is closing in on move to Brentford. The Cork native is set to join Brentford for a fee believed to be in the region of £12.5million, although that could rise to £18m with adds included. Kelleher joined Liverpool's academy back in 2015 from Ringmahon Rangers, who are also in line to receive 20% of the sale. During his time on Merseyside, the 26-year-old won a Premier League title, two league cups, an FA Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup. But with one year left on his contract, and with Giorgi Mamardashvili set to finally link up with Arne Slot's squad this summer, the Republic of Ireland international had been seeking a transfer in an effort to play more first-team football. The Bees had been facing competition from Leeds and West Ham for Kelleher's signature, but Thomas Frank's side's strong relationship with the Reds, having secured Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool last summer, helped in negotiations. Brentford were also searching for a new, first choice shot-stopper with Mark Flekken set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. More to follow...

The Republic of Ireland international will replace Mark Flekken who is joining Bayer Leverkusen for £9million. Kelleher, 26, only had one year left on contract and Liverpool were looking for around £20m for the dependable stopper who also had interest from West Ham, Leeds and Bournemouth. Brentford have been interested in Kelleher since before they signed Flekken but Liverpool have only been open to selling him since securing Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia last summer. Kelleher wants to compete for a starting place and the arrival of Mamardashvili means it is the Georgian who will be battling with Alisson next season. Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson spoke openly about wanting Kelleher to leave Anfield in search of regular minutes as a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere. Kelleher, capped 22 times for his country already, secured his second Premier League title with the Reds this season but only started 10 games with Alisson ahead of him in the pecking order. Flekken will link up with Erik ten Hag at Leverkusen and the fee will rise to £11m with add ons.
